Phone: 847-692-8390 Course Description: Pre-Algebra is designed to prepare students for the study of algebra and geometry by providing a strong foundation in skills and problem solving. Topics covered include rational numbers, decimal numbers, integers, solving equations, number theory, ratios, percents, proportions, solving inequalities, graphing, measurement, polynomials, statistics and probability. Supplies Needed: Students are expected to have the following supplies in class EVERYDAY ! * * * * * Textbook: Algebra I Concepts and Skills; Published by McDougal Littell Math Binder Pencil and/or Pen TI30XIIS Calculator Notebook or Filler Paper (for notes and assignments) Grading Procedures: Each student will earn a grade based on tests, quizzes, and assignments. Test and quiz grades will be weighted at 80% of each student's quarter grade, while assignments are weighted at 20%. Extra credit opportunities will NOT be provided – scores will solely be based on class work. Scores will be updated on the parent portal within a reasonable amount of time and on a regular basis. Daily assignments will be checked for completeness, neatness, effort, and occasionally for accuracy. A complete list of the previous nights’ correct answers is provided each day. It is the responsibility of each student to check his/her homework for correctness. Tests and quizzes will be graded thoroughly. Accuracy and a student's best effort are expected to receive top scores on tests. There will be times when certain algebraic procedures are expected to be used. Students will be graded on their performance in using the correct procedures, not just whether their final answer is correct. At the end of the semester, a Final Exam will be given. A final grade will be given that combines each student's semester grade and Final Exam score. The Final Exam score will be weighted 20% of each student's final grade. A letter grade will be assigned using the following scale: For students performing at 90% and above………..A 80% through 89%……..B 70% through 79%……..C 60% through 69%……..D 59% and lower…………F * * students earning a grade of F will be "LOOPED" at the semester Pre Algebra is included in the "looping" program at Maine East, so students must be performing at a "D" level or above. (continued on page 2) At the end of the 1st semester, any student who has not earned a grade of "D" or better, will repeat the semester’s work during second semester and must attend summer school in order to complete the course. (The cost of summer school is approximately $175 and will be scheduled for the first three weeks after 2nd semester ends in June.) Missing Assignments All homework assignments and tests missed due to an excused absence will be required the day following the student’s return. Extended absence work will require direct contact between teacher and student to arrange for an acceptable timeframe. Student is responsible for homework assigned on the day of the field trip. It will be due the following day. Assignments submitted late without a legitimate excuse are accepted for a small amount of partial credit. Academic Dishonesty Students are expected to complete all tests and assignments honestly and will not collaborate in dishonest actions. Students will not give or accept answers or assignments unless directed to by the teacher. Students caught cheating or plagiarizing will be subject to discipline as stated in the Student Handbook. Here is where to get help… COACH offers student tutors during the school day and before/after school in room 232. The MRC (Math Resource Center) offers teacher tutors during the school day in the library. All students may take advantage of the MRC during study periods or lunch. Teachers can be available before and after school, please make arrangements if you wish to meet with them. Additional Information: Students and parents may view the student’s grades via the parent portal at any time. Please feel free to contact me to discuss your child’s progress. I will do everything I am able to help guide your child be successful! Regards, Mrs. Eileen Odegard Mr. Isaac Browne
