Doors will open at 5.30pm for a 6.00pm start which has been scheduled to appeal to families – young and old. The programme will conclude by 8.15pm. Saint Michael's Singers introduce ‘Discover the Classics’, a concert packed full of ClassicFM favourites specially designed for GCSE and A-Level music students and the public to enjoy. The concert will feature Saint Michael's Singers and the Warwickshire Symphony Orchestra conducted by Paul Leddington Wright. Pieces will include O Fortuna, Carmina Burana, Nessun Dorma (being sung by Matthew Minter) and ‘Something’s coming’ from West Side Story, And the Glory of the Lord (Messiah), For unto us a child is born (Messiah), Pomp & Circumstance No. 1, “Land of Hope and Glory”. “We hope that by hearing live performances of the works that students are studying, it will bring a new exciting dimension to their understanding of the music and, of course, the public also enjoy hearing these classical favourites,” explained Paul Leddington Wright, “The concert will be a tonic for these dreary January nights.” Tickets: Adult £15, Concessions £12, Student/Child £7.50 – available from the Cathedral Shop and online at www.ticketweb.co.uk/event/154253. The choir is based at Coventry Cathedral in the UK and was formed in 1963 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013. The choir numbers around ninety members from all ages and walks of life and rehearses every Tuesday evening in order to bring a large and varied concert season to audiences across the UK. Highlights of recent years have included performances of Britten's War Requiem on the 70th anniversary of the bombing of Coventry Cathedral and in the Berliner Dom in 2012. The Singers were privileged to sing in the première of James MacMillan's Gloria which was commissioned by Coventry Cathedral as part of their 50th Anniversary celebrations and the 'Cultural Olympiad'. The choir featured in the European première of David Briggs' organ transcription of Mahler's 2nd Symphony with Gloucester Choral Society at Coventry Cathedral in May 2013.
