IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON DEPARTMENT OF EARTH SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Assistant Teaching Fellow Grade: Level 3a, Learning and Teaching Job Family Responsible to: Dr Lorraine Craig, Academic Tutor Responsible for: Delivery of Undergraduate Courses, Student Supervision and Administration Key Working Relationships (internal): Students, Academic Staff and Administration Staff Key Working Relationships (external): Prospective Students and External Lecturers Campus location: South Kensington The Purpose of the Post: The Assistant Teaching Fellow will support the mission of the Department of Earth Science and Engineering in undergraduate teaching and related administration. The Assistant Teaching Fellow is not expected to undertake subject-based research; this is a teaching and administrative post under the Professional, Technical and Operational Services – Learning and Teaching families. Key responsibilities: Contribute to the delivery of the undergraduate geophysics degree programme by teaching undergraduates, and assisting others to do so, in two or more of the core subject areas of mathematics, computer programming, physics, surface processes as applied to geophysics. Assist in the delivery of undergraduate geophysical and/or geological fieldwork including the planning and execution of the field programme. Contribute to the supervision of undergraduate projects. Contribute to the examination and assessment of undergraduates, including the marking of coursework and assignments under supervision. Contribute to the coordination and administration of the undergraduate degree, including outreach and the professional skills development areas. Teaching and Learning Support: To teach undergraduates, as a member of the departmental teaching team, within the established geoscience and geophysics degree programmes, with assistance and support. To act as a demonstrator in practical and problem classes. To support the teaching of geophysics or geology in the field, and in the organisation of geophysical field classes. To assist with developing teaching materials including writing handouts and other learning support materials. To supervise the work of students, provide advice on study skills and help them with learning issues. To mark coursework, exam scripts and assignments under supervision. To provide constructive feedback including feedback on essays and course assessment. To assist in admissions processes. To act as a personal tutor. To reflect on teaching practice and delivery, and the development of personal teaching and learning skills more generally. To keep abreast of developments in teaching and learning. Administration and other activities: To assist in the organisation of activities such as student recruitment, student placements, and outreach work. To design and deliver outreach activities for diverse audiences. To assist with the delivery of professional development support for students. To undertake duties related to course administration, including attendance records, Health & Safety matters relating to practicals, and other specific departmental roles as may be required. To participate in Departmental meetings as required. The potential to make a contribution to the administration and operations of the undergraduate programme. Competencies, Skills and Abilities: An ability to support and contribute to the delivery of the core geophysical undergraduate programme offered within the Department. The ability to communicate well, conveying ideas and concepts clearly and effectively to undergraduates. The ability and enthusiasm to contribute to undergraduate geophysical or geological field trips. The capability to present geophysical subjects in an enthusiastic and motivating manner.
