The Purpose of the Post:
The Senior Teaching Fellow will make a major contribution to the mission of the
Department of Earth Science and Engineering in undergraduate teaching and related
administration. The Senior Teaching Fellow is not expected to undertake subjectbased research; this is a teaching and administrative post under the Professional,
Technical and Operational Services – Learning and Teaching families.
Key responsibilities:
 Make a major contribution to the delivery of the undergraduate geophysics degree
programme by teaching undergraduates in at least two of the core geophysical
subject areas of mathematics, physics, computer programming and surface
processes.
 Be an enthusiastic and effective teacher of geophysics within the field, involved in
all aspects of undergraduate geophysical fieldwork including designing and
leading field trips, the design and supervision of independent geophysical
projects, and the planning, coordination and execution of the field programme.
 Contribute to small-group teaching of geophysics, including acting as personal
tutor to individual students, leading tutorials and small-group seminars, and
supervising fourth-year MSci and other undergraduate projects.
 Contribute to the examination and assessment of undergraduates, through formal
examination, coursework, project and oral assessment, including serving on the
Board of Examiners.
 Contribute to the coordination, planning, operations, admissions, outreach,
professional development guidance and broader administration of the
undergraduate degree, including serving on appropriate departmental or College
committees.
Teaching and Learning Support:
 To teach undergraduates as a member of the departmental teaching team within
the geoscience degree programme
 To give lectures, seminars and tutorials, and lead practical classes
 To teach geophysics in the field, and to design, organise and run geophysical field
classes
 To develop own teaching materials, methods and approaches
 To use appropriate teaching, learning support and assessment methods
 To identify areas where current provision is in need of revision or improvement
 To contribute to the planning, design and development of objectives and curricula
 To be module/course/year organiser as appropriate
 To supervise the work of students, provide advice on study skills and help them
with learning problems
 To supervise undergraduate student projects, including final-year MSci projects
 To set and assess coursework, and set and mark examinations using appropriate
criteria
 To assess the progress of students, and provide constructive feedback including
feedback on essays and course assessment
 To coordinate with internal and visiting lecturers
 To assist in admissions processes
 To act as a personal tutor

To take responsibility for development of new initiatives in teaching
To apply knowledge acquired from scholarship to teaching
To reflect on teaching practice and delivery and the development of personal
teaching and learning skills generally
 To remain professional in practice and maintain knowledge in own specialist area.
Administration and other activities:
 To participate in and develop activities such as student recruitment, student
placements, student professional development and outreach work
 To design and deliver outreach activities for diverse audiences
 To undertake specific departmental roles as may be required
 To participate in committees and working groups within the department and
College as required
 To participate in relevant professional activities
 To undertake duties related to course administration, including organisation of
teaching activities, attendance records, and Health & Safety matters relating to
practicals

Qualifications:
 A degree (or equivalent) in a geoscience [including geophysics] or relevant
science subject.
 A doctorate (or equivalent) in the wider earth sciences, or, exceptionally,
significant professional geophysical experience at a level normally associated with
the possession of a PhD.
Experience and Knowledge:
 A proven track record in geophysical teaching or mentoring, and associated
administration. Such experience need not necessarily have occurred within the
university sector.
 An ability to contribute, at the highest international standards, to the delivery of the
geophysical undergraduate programme offered within the Department.
 The ability to communicate well, conveying ideas and concepts clearly and
effectively to undergraduates.
 The ability and enthusiasm to lead undergraduate geophysical field trips and
independent projects.
 The capability to present geophysical subjects in an enthusiastic and motivating
manner.
 Up-to-date specialist knowledge in depth and breadth of one or more core
geophysical subjects, consistent with their delivery to Masters level.
 Familiarity with a variety of strategies to promote and assess learning.
 The potential to make a contribution to the administration, operations and strategic
planning of the undergraduate programme.
