STIs affect the genitals, area around the anus, groin and abdomen. Do you know what a STI is? •Viral •HIV •Genital Herpes •(HPV) •Bacterial •Gonorrhea •Syphilis •Chlamydia •Fungal •Thrush What types of STIs have you heard about? •Most signs and symptoms are easy to recognise. Some STIs show no signs or symptoms. Signs are visible and include swelling, redness, ulcers, blisters, sores, lumps, staining of underwear. Symptoms are not visible but felt, these include pain, burning, tingling, itching and odours in the genital area or when urinating. Did you know the signs and symptoms that someone can experience? •If left untreated in women, STIs can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, cervical cancers and infertility and spontaneous abortion. Untreated syphilis can lead to complications such as paralysis, blindness, deafness, heart disease and insanity. •HIV is an STI when transmitted through unprotected sexual contact. STIs significantly increase the risk of HIV transmission because they cause swelling and sores which allow easy entry of HIV into the body. Prevention measures are the same. •Abstinence and faithfulness Do you know what the risks are of not treating a STI? Does a STI increase your risk of HIV? How can you protect yourself and others? •Most STIs are similar and simple enough to treat with the same medication. They can be cured with a short-course of antibiotics. Others can receive treatment of symptoms but can never be cured or eliminated from the body. Some types of HPV can cause warts which may require surgery, freezing or burning. The above prevention behaviour should be practiced whilst on treatment to avoid re-infection. Do you know that most STIs can easily be treated? •Masturbation •Consistent and correct use of condoms •Medical male circumcision •Partner disclosure and treatment Symptomatic screening: is a question and answer based individual clinical risk assessment of infection or disease. A healthcare provider discusses and assesses the presence of signs and symptoms commonly associated with an infection or disease. A physical examination is not conducted. The results are preliminary and indicative of possible infection. Those at risk must be referred for diagnostic testing to confirm the clinical assessment before treatment can be prescribed. 3rd Floor 158 Jan Smuts Avenue Rosebank 2196 PO Box 950 Parklands 2121 South Africa Tel: + 27 11 880 4821 Fax: +27 11 880 6084 web: www.bizwell.co.za and www.sabcoha.org STI SYMTOMATIC SCREENING FIRST NAME SURNAME GENDER (M/F) DATE OF BIRTH (Y:M:D) Patient History Tick () in the appropriate block or complete where required Have you had unprotected sex in the last 3 months?
