Pre-Calculus is designed to help prepare you for a first year mathematics course in college. We will study some concepts that have been previously exposed to you, but we will understand them at a much deeper level. There will also be a large focus on trigonometry the second half of the year.
During this course we will learn topics that will help your ACT scores and give a brief introduction to AP Calculus and AP Statistics.

MATERIALS NEEDED
Textbook: Glencoe Advanced Mathematical Concepts: Precalculus with Applications
Graphing Calculator – (owned or rented from CCHS). I do not have any in class for you to borrow I recommended purchasing the
TI-84 plus. A TI-84 plus costs $90-$100. As you look to purchase a calculator, if you have any calculator questions do not hesitate to ask me. If you do not own one there is a rental option available through the math department. (Please ask for a contract & information)
Pencil – all work turned in must be in pencil!
Notebook/Binder
Agenda – this is your hall pass
Graph paper will be needed at various times. All graphs must be on graph paper. I will not accept hand drawn coordinate planes to graph problems.
GRADING - Your grades will be calculated with the following weights.
Homework (30%) – graded on accuracy and effort. o
Assigned daily and questions answered the next day for a maximum of 10 minutes o Each day’s assignment must have the page number and problem numbers on the top o
Homework will be checked 2 to 4 times a week. Each time homework is checked we will draw a card. If the card is red, then homework is turned in for accuracy. If the card is black, then the card will not be turned in for accuracy instead it will be graded by a peer for completion. The peer who grades your paper will sign their name at the bottom of your paper. If they are caught not recording the appropriate grade they will receive a 0 for that particular homework automatically. o
Any homework not turned in at the time I collect it is half credit – NO EXCEPTIONS o
You can correct any homework that was graded for accuracy for half of the points back o
Classwork will be weighted as homework. o o
Bell ringers & exit slips will be checked for completion and effort.
There will be other times when participation grades will be taken for in-class activities. o Late Work -
▪ Late work will only be accepted until the day of that current chapter’s test.
▪
Late work will be penalized by 50% unless late due to excused absence
▪
Excused Absences – you have 2 school days for every day you missed to make up the work for .full credit.
Quizzes (20%) – graded on accuracy o
Will be given once or twice a chapter o Multiple choice and short answer
Test (50%) – graded on accuracy o Some tests will be more than one class period o There will be non-calculator portions for most chapters
ATTENDANCE:
Unexcused Absences – you cannot make up any work missed!
Field Trips/Pre-arranged Absences – since they are prearranged you must come return to class with the homework completed.
If not, the work will be considered late since you knew you were going to be out. If you feel that you will need tutoring over the topic, you must set up a tutoring appointment before your absence in order to be able to turn the work in late without penalty.
Tests/Quizzes are made up after school only!
Tests can be retaken if you have failed it. The retake is only worth 65% and must be retaken within 2 weeks of the original test date. You must also provide corrections to the first test before a retake can be given.
ESS SCHEDULE
I plan on staying after school on Tuesdays most weeks. Check with me to make sure prior to staying.
I will be in my room after school most days if Tuesdays do not work for you. Talk to me and let me know if you plan on staying. I will typically not be able to help on Wednesdays due to staff meetings.
Lunch tutoring is available every day during your lunch period. You can take your lunch with you to eat while you are tutored. This is with a different teacher and will be held either in the library or his classroom.
TENTATIVE COURSE OUTLINE - I have the right to adjust this based on the needs of the class.
