Honors Mathematical Analysis 2015-2016 Course Information Mr. C. Manker Campbell County High School E-mail: christopher.manker@campbell.kyschools.us Plan Period: 4th Phone: 635-4161 ex: 1238 Webpage: http://www.campbellcountyschools.org/olc/class.aspx?id=39036&s=1063 Course Description: Honors Mathematical Analysis is a full-year course satisfying one of four required math credits. Students will be introduced to a variety of advanced topics in mathematics including, but not limited to, combinatorics and probability, statistics, trigonometric/periodic functions, vectors, polar functions, number theory, and programming. In addition, students will apply concepts acquired in algebra I and geometry in problem-solving scenarios, strengthening their logical, analytical, and mathematical ability. The course will also emphasize skills and strategies needed for success on the PLAN, PSAT, ACT, and AP Calculus exams. It is a pre-requisite for honors algebra II BC, honors pre-cal BC, and AP Calculus BC (which earns students credits for calculus I & calculus II). Course Standards: Students will: Strengthen algebraic/geometric understanding and application Use pattern observation to develop mathematical formulas and theorems Prove mathematical relationships Improve problem-solving ability Enhance visualization and logic skills Use statistical reasoning to evaluate data Understand how trigonometric functions can model cyclic relationships. Model the real world using a variety of types of functions (linear, quadratic, exponential, trigonometric, etc.) Analyze motion using vectors Use technology (graphing calculators, spreadsheets, etc.) to analyze relationships and data Demonstrate academic leadership General Outline of Topics (Subject to change based on student needs and data analysis) Combinatorics/Probability Advanced Statistics Algebraic Modeling Quadratics/Polynomial Functions/Optimization Right Triangles/Trigonometry Periodic Functions Introduction to Physics/Vectors Vectors Alternate Graphing Systems (Polar/Parametric Equations) Geometric Constructions (Optional) Introduction to Programming (Optional) Required Materials: paper pencils/pens graphing calculator class notebook or binder dry erase marker Graphing Calculator Policy: Campbell County High School mathematics courses require the use of a graphing calculator. Students are encouraged to purchase a TI-84 Plus, which can be used for all future math courses including AP Calculus and the ACT. Calculators may be available for rent ($30 per year), but most students will save long-term by purchasing their own calculators. If you cannot acquire a calculator or a rental is not available, please contact me. Students MAY NOT use cell phones with calculator apps! (Not allowed on ACT, AP exam, etc.) Grading Distribution: 25% of your grade will come from homework, quizzes, and class activities. 75% of your grade will be based on test scores! Notebook Grade: You are required to keep a notebook/binder with all handouts and notes from class. The notebook grade counts as one homework grade at the end of each chapter, which should help your homework grade. Classwork/Homework: You will have time in class to work on most assignments, but expect 30-45 minutes of work per night outside class. Most assignments are worth 10-15 points. Makeup Work: You may not make up work for UNEXCUSED absences (make sure you have absences for tests excused!!!). For EXCUSED absences, you will have as many days as you missed to complete and submit the assignment. I will post daily assignments in the classroom. You are responsible for getting absences excused by the office and getting your makeup work -- don’t expect me to hunt you down and give it to you! Late Work: Two points off for a day late, half credit afterward. If late work becomes a problem, I may no longer accept late work after the third late assignment!! Quizzes: I will give 1-2 quizzes per chapter, usually announced a day ahead. Quizzes may vary in length, but will typically be similar in value to a homework assignment. Tests: I will give a test at the end of most chapters, usually with about a week’s prior notice. Expect about 2-3 tests each quarter. Tests are worth 100 points, and I give partial credit for correct work. Most tests will include a bonus problem. Barring extenuating circumstances, extended time will not be given, so it is important to work on accuracy and time management when you review. Retakes: A central focus of this course is preparing students to succeed in AP Calculus and in collegiate math courses. As a result, I will not give retakes for regular chapter tests. Students can, however, take the Quarter Test at the end of each quarter to replace the lowest test score from the quarter. The Quarter Test will be a comprehensive test over the topics of focus in that particular quarter. A topic list will be posted on my webpage in advance of the test date. Semester Exam: The semester exam is worth 20% of the semester grade. This grade will not affect your quarter grade; however, the final grade listed on your transcript is an average of the two semester grades, including the exams. Hall Passes: We have five minute class changes to allow for bathroom breaks, drinks, etc. I will not be letting students out of class on a regular basis. If you have a medical need for a hall pass have your parent contact me so accommodations can be made! Cell Phones/Electronic Devices: All cell phones, music players, and wireless devices must be put away unless the class is given specific permission to use them for educational purposes. Unauthorized devices will be confiscated and turned over to the office. End of Class: I have few pet peeves, but there is an important one: DON’T PACK UP AND STAND BY THE DOOR BEFORE THE END OF CLASS! Stay seated, keep working, and wait for the bell. Communication: We will follow a very tight schedule this year, and chances are you’re going to fall behind if you miss a day or your class period does not meet. If you are aware of potential absences or other conflicts in advance, let me know so I can create a schedule that best addresses the issue. Tutoring: I will be available after school until 2:45 most Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Also, any student who wants to stay until 4:00 and work on assignments during academic team practices (Tues/Thurs) is welcome to stay. Students can also bring their food to the Media Center for help at lunch. Feel free to check with me to arrange a time for help! Webpage: I will post assignments daily on my class webpage. I will also post links to handouts, review/remediation videos, and bonus problems. On occasion, I may teach using a “flipped classroom” and ask you to watch a videotaped lesson online as homework, allowing us to spend a full class period working in class on challenging problems. Email: The best way to reach me is by email at christopher.manker@campbell.kyschools.us. I check email quite often and respond pretty quickly. I rarely receive phone calls, so I tend to respond most quickly to email.
