Ithaca College School of Business Editor: Rachel Lamensdorf Fall 2009 Vol. #2 Goals Our present goals are to achieve the IMA Gold Award of Excellence and to continue to increase membership in the club. We are working with our IMA representative and our faculty advisor to meet and surpass the requirements to achieve this award. We plan to set requirements to get more members involved in ICAA events. We hope that the common programming with the ASC will help to resolve scheduling conflicts and thereby increase participation. The Accounting Association provides a vehicle for motivated students to: Form relationships with professionals in the field of accounting Business curriculum, and Improve the community through service activities Mission The Ithaca College Accounting Association is available to provide a forum of high quality programs and activities aimed at creating a bridge between the college environment and the real word that promotes professional and personal growth of members. What kinds of field trips or plant tours would be most interesting to freshmen and sophomores? Should a big brother-big sister program be establish to connect the groups, make sure freshmen and sophomores attend meetings, and keep everyone informed of what’s happening with ICAA? Is there a way to connect with incoming students earlier and better, either through admissions calls, orientation sessions, summer newsletters, or some other venue? Can ICAA establish a High School Ambassadors group to recruit students to IC and accounting? Consider what can be done to make the student organization more visible and sustainable with alumni: Is there a special way to tie with the Office of Alumni Relations to make more contacts? Can a social networking web site be created and sustained to inform alumni of activities? Are there ways of recognizing alumni, such as an Outstanding Accounting Alumnus award, an Alumni Highlight Corner in a newsletter, or something else? Is there an activity (social, community service, or professional) that can become an ongoing event with alumni? There are so many things that you can do to demonstrate your commitment, develop leadership, build skills, enhance opportunities, and give you the edge you need for success. Let’s build bridges from those just beginning their accounting education to those with professional success. Become Apart of the Executive Board! What does the Executive Board Do? 1. Required to attend weekly board meetings 2. Expected to attend all ICAA events and activities 3. In the event that an officer consistently demonstrates the inability to perform the duties of his or her position on the executive board, that officer should tender resignation by submitting a letter to the Board. In circumstances where the delinquent officer fails to tender resignation within a reasonable time period, the Board will notify the officer of his removal from office with a letter of dismissal. What are the Board Duties? President Prepare agenda for each meeting and preside over meetings Responsible for the organization and delegation of responsibilities for all accounting association activities and events Must represent club at all events and DSAC meetings Assists other board members and delegates tasks as needed Responsible for making all programming events Works with other ASC presidents to schedule events Serves as a liaison with Ithaca-Cortland IMA chapter VP of Finance Prepare and update annual budget Responsible for all club financial transactions and maintenance of club accounts Responsibilities of fundraising Responsible for collection of annual dues VP of Membership Records and monitors membership participation Maintains roster and contact information of members Responsible for creating and maintaining signup sheets at all functions VP of Reporting Responsible for monitoring the club’s progress towards meeting the requirements of the IMA Gold Award of Excellence and for preparing documentation for submission Reports to club advisor and local IMA chapter president regularly Acts as a liaison to the local IMA chapter by attending IMA chapter meetings and reporting back to the board Secretary Records minutes for all events meetings Organizes all club information Assists the Vice President of Reporting with reports and submissions Are you Interested? Advisor’s Corner Let’s consider ICAA’s mission as a challenge to each of you: To provide a forum of high quality programs and activities aimed at creating a bridge between the college environment and the real world that promotes professional and personal growth of members. Over the years, ICAA has earned the highest recognition from the Institute of Management Accountants for its exceptional efforts at fulfilling its mission. In fact, in 2007 and 2008, the Ithaca College student chapter earned the Gold Award of Excellence. I am excited that the current executive board is committed to sustain that streak of excellence, while improving on its efforts. But to be successful, it will require the active participation and interest of every member. That’s where you come in. I challenge each of you to develop a new idea for “creating a bridge” and then taking on a leadership role to see it to success. Consider what can be done to make the student organization more accessible for freshmen and sophomores: Is there a social activity that would be a fun bridge between the under- and upper-class students? Is there a program and/or speaker that would help
