Science: (Mrs. Windell)
The emphasis in 7th grade is Life Science. Students investigate cells in depth as they compare cell
structure and function and gain an understanding of cell reproduction and genetics. Through a study of energy
and life, students will learn how organisms obtain and use energy through photosynthesis, food webs, and
respiration. They will examine environmental changes over time as they discover the interdependent nature of
populations and communities and describe how species adapt by evolving. Students will also create and use a
basic classification scheme to identify plants and animals.
Students will be required to keep a well-organized folder and notebook, since we will not rely on the book
very much. Instead, students will be actively engaged in the inquiry process as they collaborate with others to
understand the concepts being covered.
English: (Mrs Windell/Mr. Fox)
This course will involve novel readings (Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, Shooting Kabul, Crispin, etc.) that will coincide
with our Social Studies units. Students will also learn how to write formal essays. Outside reading is strongly encouraged
and students must have a personal book with them at all times. Students will continue learning to write using the Six Traits
of Writing, Story Elements, and Literary Devices.
Social Studies: (Mrs. Grey-Gillhouse)
This course is a study of ancient world history in the Middle Ages. The regions include: Europe (Medieval
Period/Renaissance/Reformation/Modern Age, Middle East (Rise of Islam), Kingdoms of West Africa, Japan, &
Civilizations of America. Students will learn the ancient & current geography of the regions through map making. They will
also learn to use a variety of note-taking strategies and which ones work best for their study habits. They will need a
notebook and folder or binder, pencil, blue or black pen, red pen, & colored pencils. They must also have an outside reading
book with them at all times for every class.
Health Enhancement: (Mrs. Grey-Gillhouse, Ms. Wilson, Mr. Fox)
This course will involve Health and PE alternating each day of the week. PE will range from individual fitness activities to
team sports and is 50% of the grade. Students are required to make up the 45 minutes of exercise they miss when absent.
They must turn in a signed form with the type of exercise done and have a parent signature. This can be found on our team
webpage. Health class will cover the following topics: Mental/Emotional, Social Health/Fitness & Nutrition, Body
