PRESIDENTS REPORT
2011 was a year of contrasting results on and off the field. While
significant steps forward were taken on the field, the club had some familiar
off field issues.
On field the year started with a significant recruiting drive that saw us
put together a much stronger playing list than in 2010. It was a calculated
recruiting drive from our coaches Paul Carbis and Col Rule that was focused
on a balance between youth and experience. This playing list continued to
improve as the season went on, culminating in the senior side winning its last
four games to finish the year with 7 wins (5 more than last year).
Central to our revival over the past two seasons has been our fantastic
coaching staff. Paul Carbis (senior coach), Brian Coppock (reserves coach)
and Col Rule (senior assistant coach) have done an outstanding job
rebuilding our playing list. It is unfortunate that due to different circumstances
all of these men have had to leave our club. We wish them the best of luck in
their future endeavors and thank them for their outstanding service.
Off the field we unfortunately fell into some old habits. Sponsorship
was well down on 2010 leaving the committee to have to find other sources of
income which has left the club with a shortfall for 2011. We have recently
come to an agreement with the EFL to pay our debt to them over the next two
years and this deal will provide the club with the security to move forward with
our other debtors. Furthermore, off field help also reduced during 2011
leaving too much work to too few. This has long been an issue for our club
and more people need to put their hands up to help the committee.
The help that we did have during season 2011 was again outstanding.
Delia and Adrian Meagher and Bernadette and Craig Somerville have been
constant supporters of the club over many years and 2011 was no different.
Weather it was Thursday night dinners, Saturday lunches or helping with on
field duties like umpires escort and the interchange, the Meagher’s and
Somerville’s were always there to help out. Russell Bennett again did a great
job as our time keeper this year and Margret and Rob were great working the
gates. Emma Boehm stepped up this year to run the bar on game days and
did a fantastic job throughout the year. I would like to thank all our volunteers
(I’m sure I’m missing some and I apologize if I have) for all their work
throughout the year, we could not operate without you.
While our sponsorship was down in 2011 we still had some fantastic
support from our loyal sponsors. Nathan Small Enterprises again took the
role of our major sponsor and we thank Nathan for his continued support. We
also had great support from The Harp Hotel, Boags Draught, Link Educational
Supplies, Dee Ryall, Productology, Mike Symon, Fonterra, Beetle Branding,
Penfold Motors and All Saab Parts. We thank you all for your support.
It is a great pleasure to welcome to the club Frank Salanitri to the club
as our new senior coach. Frank has done a fantastic job organizing pre
season and recruiting new players to the club over the last few weeks and I’m
sure Frank and his coaching staff will do a great job of leading the club in
2012 and beyond.
I would like to thank my fellow committee members. You have worked
tirelessly this year and it has been a pleasure working with you. I would like to
single out the work of one individual. Richard Spurr has done a mountain of

work over the last two years. As well as being my Vice President and the
Football Manager, he has nearly single handedly restarted our junior club. In
2011 we fielded our first junior side in over 30 years in our under 9’s team and
followed it later in the year fielding a side in the inaugural EFL girls under 12’s
competition. Richie has done a fantastic job and I wish him well as he looks
to grow the future of our club.
Finally, I would like to thank all the members of the club who have
supported me over the last two years. 2011 will be my final year as President
of the Nunawading Football Club. I have been honored to lead the revival of
our great club and I’m sure there are many successful years just around the
corner.

SENIOR COACHES REPORT
After the 2010 season had finished, the match committee went about
recruiting for season 2011. A great job by Col & Coppsy saw an influx of new
& returning players to the club with over 30 new recruits. The goal was to be
more competitive & make finals.
After a solid pre season our practice match form was good & there
were promising signs. We were quietly confident taking on a top 4 side from
the year before in Round 1, but unfortunately Glen Waverley jumped us at the
start & the game was over quickly. We soon found out that as much as we
had improved on 2010 so had the rest of the competition.
As all clubs find out during the season, injuries can play a significant
role in the out come of a season. Nunawading struck the injury curse early.
We lost a key back man in Peter James (Jamo) before round 1, by round 2 we
had lost Matt Hood to a nasty finger injury, we were looking for Hoody to be a
key on baller for us this season & in the same game we lost small forward
Mark Wilson to a knee injury. Our next big loss was Eamon Halliday to illness.
Eamon was showing some good signs at training & the group was looking
forward to seeing the big fella perform on game day. Unfortunately after
returning from overseas he fell gravely ill. We lost some key players
throughout the year & for us it always seems to be a tall. Meaghery struggled
all year with his ankle until it became too much & had to miss most of the
season. Injuries to Chief, TD, Dish & Rhys also didn’t help our cause.
From the doom & gloom of injuries the team persevered & were
competitive most weeks. Compared to 2010 we only had 2 big blow outs in
excess of 80 points. We pushed FTG twice, had our chances against South
Belgrave & The Basin. Our last 10 games saw the worst & best of the senior
team. We went on a 6 game losing streak: FH 50 points, Heathmont 84, FTG
27, Eastern 33, Sth B 33 & The Basin 87. We then bounced back to win our
last 4 games; Kilsyth 32, Surrey Park 153, Forest Hill 23 & Canterbury 62.
One of many highlights for me in season 2011 was our win over Forest Hill
away. After the playing group were informed of the clubs position during the
week, all players were still committed to finishing off the season. We came out
& played well early only to miss a few opportunities to be down at ¼ time. We
fell away badly in the second quarter & were down by 31 points at half time. I
thought we could still improve in several areas & could get back in the game.
The boys copped a spray anyway! They went out, played with purpose &
looked to be on top. At ¾ time we still found ourselves down by 21 points. We
could feel they were starting to break & thought we still had a chance of
getting the win. The boys came out & played some of the best footy for the
year & kicked 8.7 to 1.5 to win by 23 points.
There were some great individual performances this year.
Congratulations to Mark Shalders (Rolla) for taking out our best & fairest &
making the Div 4 team of the year. Congratulations also to Martin McGauran
(Moose) 2nd B&F, Matt Whitty (Disco) 3rd B&F, Brett Shalders Goal Kicking 70

goals, Sam Hesketh Unselfish Player, Tim Somerville Most Improved & Tom
Denham for the coaches award.
I wish to thank the following people for their efforts over the last 2
years:
Holdsy & Meaghery for leading the team over the last 2 years
The Meagher & Somerville families for their fantastic hospitality on Thursday
nights & Saturdays
Scott Cairns for taking on one of the hardest roles at a football club… The
President
Kenny & the trainers for all their hard work & commitment
To my assistants Col, Coppsy, Disco & Cam; you need good people
around you to help make your job easier. The amount of time Col & I spent on
the phone each week discussing everything & anything will be missed.
Coppsy’s stellar job of coaching a different team each week & getting the best
out of those teams & then helping me with the senior team. Disco, thank you
for your input & support this year. And to Cam who copped it every week
when running for me & helping out at training.
The decision to leave Nunawading FC wasn’t made easy. The distance
from home to Koonung Reserve got too much & sadly I won’t continue
coaching this club. I have a new role with the Frankston Dolphins FC as
development coach. This means many Sunday games, which will allow me to
come down, sit on the hill with a nice cold one & watch an exciting NFC next
year.
From almost nothing in 2010 to a team that now promises so much for
the 2012 season, I wish Frank & the new committee every success.
Regards,
Carbo

RESERVES COACHES REPORT
After three years at NFC my time on the coaching committee has come
to an end. I have enjoyed my time and thank the committees for giving me
the opportunity. I would also like to thank Brett Rowe, Paul Carbis, Col Rule
and Matt Whitty for their mentoring and sharing of ideas. Thanks again to
Holdsy for suggesting I come to the club.
Preseason started full of enthusiasm as the coaching staffs recruiting
efforts started to show on the track. Ideas for leadership programs, new
jumpers, team uniforms, fresh faces and renewed enthusiasm brought an
excitement to the preseason. The summer preseason at the primary school
and on the beach helped with our fitness and development of a gameplan that
the reserve side used effectively throughout the year.
After a year away from our home ground it was good to kick off the
year in front of our supporters. After a slow start, our preseason form
returned and we finished strongly for a narrow first up loss. Although
disappointed with the loss, extremely encouraging signs for the rest of the
year were evident. The brand of footy we played when at our best was
exciting to say the least. A solid backline, courageous mids and talented
forwards made my sideline role enjoyable and satisfying. Unfortunately our
year was severely hampered by injuries. A team that I considered to be a
genuine flag hope ended up middle of the road. However, this presented
more opportunities for our first and second year players to impress. Due to
great numbers through out the year we rarely relied on ringins (except for the
extremely popular Mr. Magic) and due to our depth we never disgraced
ourselves. We had some exciting wins throughout the year. The JK 300
game was fantastic, and our come from behind nail biter in the last round
against Canterbury iced the season perfectly.
Although we had some disappointing losses, it is my responsibility to
prepare the reserve players for senior football. It was very pleasing to see so
many of the men I had coached earlier in the year contribute to the seniors
late season success.
My number one principal when it comes to football is to make the club
your own.
The more involved you become the more rewarding the
involvement becomes. Although the ultimate on field success did not come
for me during my time at Nunawading, I am rewarded with great friendships
and a football ‘home’. I look forward to coming back to the den in future and
watch the mighty lions devour the opposition, then celebrating with a tops off
party later that night.
Good luck to you all in the future,
Copsy
