While significant steps forward were taken on the field, the club had some familiar off field issues. On field the year started with a significant recruiting drive that saw us put together a much stronger playing list than in 2010. It was a calculated recruiting drive from our coaches Paul Carbis and Col Rule that was focused on a balance between youth and experience. This playing list continued to improve as the season went on, culminating in the senior side winning its last four games to finish the year with 7 wins (5 more than last year). Central to our revival over the past two seasons has been our fantastic coaching staff. Paul Carbis (senior coach), Brian Coppock (reserves coach) and Col Rule (senior assistant coach) have done an outstanding job rebuilding our playing list. It is unfortunate that due to different circumstances all of these men have had to leave our club. We wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors and thank them for their outstanding service. Off the field we unfortunately fell into some old habits. Sponsorship was well down on 2010 leaving the committee to have to find other sources of income which has left the club with a shortfall for 2011. We have recently come to an agreement with the EFL to pay our debt to them over the next two years and this deal will provide the club with the security to move forward with our other debtors. Furthermore, off field help also reduced during 2011 leaving too much work to too few. This has long been an issue for our club and more people need to put their hands up to help the committee. The help that we did have during season 2011 was again outstanding. Delia and Adrian Meagher and Bernadette and Craig Somerville have been constant supporters of the club over many years and 2011 was no different. Weather it was Thursday night dinners, Saturday lunches or helping with on field duties like umpires escort and the interchange, the Meagher’s and Somerville’s were always there to help out. Russell Bennett again did a great job as our time keeper this year and Margret and Rob were great working the gates. Emma Boehm stepped up this year to run the bar on game days and did a fantastic job throughout the year. I would like to thank all our volunteers (I’m sure I’m missing some and I apologize if I have) for all their work throughout the year, we could not operate without you. While our sponsorship was down in 2011 we still had some fantastic support from our loyal sponsors. Nathan Small Enterprises again took the role of our major sponsor and we thank Nathan for his continued support. As well as being my Vice President and the Football Manager, he has nearly single handedly restarted our junior club. In 2011 we fielded our first junior side in over 30 years in our under 9’s team and followed it later in the year fielding a side in the inaugural EFL girls under 12’s competition. Richie has done a fantastic job and I wish him well as he looks to grow the future of our club. A great job by Col & Coppsy saw an influx of new & returning players to the club with over 30 new recruits. The goal was to be more competitive & make finals. After a solid pre season our practice match form was good & there were promising signs. We were quietly confident taking on a top 4 side from the year before in Round 1, but unfortunately Glen Waverley jumped us at the start & the game was over quickly. We soon found out that as much as we had improved on 2010 so had the rest of the competition. As all clubs find out during the season, injuries can play a significant role in the out come of a season. Nunawading struck the injury curse early. We lost a key back man in Peter James (Jamo) before round 1, by round 2 we had lost Matt Hood to a nasty finger injury, we were looking for Hoody to be a key on baller for us this season & in the same game we lost small forward Mark Wilson to a knee injury. Our next big loss was Eamon Halliday to illness. Eamon was showing some good signs at training & the group was looking forward to seeing the big fella perform on game day. Unfortunately after returning from overseas he fell gravely ill. We lost some key players throughout the year & for us it always seems to be a tall. Meaghery struggled all year with his ankle until it became too much & had to miss most of the season. Injuries to Chief, TD, Dish & Rhys also didn’t help our cause. From the doom & gloom of injuries the team persevered & were competitive most weeks. Compared to 2010 we only had 2 big blow outs in excess of 80 points. We pushed FTG twice, had our chances against South Belgrave & The Basin. Our last 10 games saw the worst & best of the senior team. We went on a 6 game losing streak: FH 50 points, Heathmont 84, FTG 27, Eastern 33, Sth B 33 & The Basin 87. We then bounced back to win our last 4 games; Kilsyth 32, Surrey Park 153, Forest Hill 23 & Canterbury 62. One of many highlights for me in season 2011 was our win over Forest Hill away. After the playing group were informed of the clubs position during the week, all players were still committed to finishing off the season. We came out & played well early only to miss a few opportunities to be down at ¼ time. We fell away badly in the second quarter & were down by 31 points at half time. I thought we could still improve in several areas & could get back in the game. The boys copped a spray anyway! They went out, played with purpose & looked to be on top. At ¾ time we still found ourselves down by 21 points. We could feel they were starting to break & thought we still had a chance of getting the win. The boys came out & played some of the best footy for the year & kicked 8.7 to 1.5 to win by 23 points. There were some great individual performances this year. Congratulations to Mark Shalders (Rolla) for taking out our best & fairest & making the Div 4 team of the year. And to Cam who copped it every week when running for me & helping out at training. The decision to leave Nunawading FC wasn’t made easy. The distance from home to Koonung Reserve got too much & sadly I won’t continue coaching this club. I have a new role with the Frankston Dolphins FC as development coach. This means many Sunday games, which will allow me to come down, sit on the hill with a nice cold one & watch an exciting NFC next year. From almost nothing in 2010 to a team that now promises so much for the 2012 season, I wish Frank & the new committee every success. I have enjoyed my time and thank the committees for giving me the opportunity. I would also like to thank Brett Rowe, Paul Carbis, Col Rule and Matt Whitty for their mentoring and sharing of ideas. Thanks again to Holdsy for suggesting I come to the club. Preseason started full of enthusiasm as the coaching staffs recruiting efforts started to show on the track. Ideas for leadership programs, new jumpers, team uniforms, fresh faces and renewed enthusiasm brought an excitement to the preseason. The summer preseason at the primary school and on the beach helped with our fitness and development of a gameplan that the reserve side used effectively throughout the year. After a year away from our home ground it was good to kick off the year in front of our supporters. After a slow start, our preseason form returned and we finished strongly for a narrow first up loss. Although disappointed with the loss, extremely encouraging signs for the rest of the year were evident. The brand of footy we played when at our best was exciting to say the least. A solid backline, courageous mids and talented forwards made my sideline role enjoyable and satisfying. Unfortunately our year was severely hampered by injuries. A team that I considered to be a genuine flag hope ended up middle of the road. However, this presented more opportunities for our first and second year players to impress. Due to great numbers through out the year we rarely relied on ringins (except for the extremely popular Mr. Magic) and due to our depth we never disgraced ourselves. We had some exciting wins throughout the year. The JK 300 game was fantastic, and our come from behind nail biter in the last round against Canterbury iced the season perfectly. Although we had some disappointing losses, it is my responsibility to prepare the reserve players for senior football. It was very pleasing to see so many of the men I had coached earlier in the year contribute to the seniors late season success. My number one principal when it comes to football is to make the club your own. The more involved you become the more rewarding the involvement becomes. Although the ultimate on field success did not come for me during my time at Nunawading, I am rewarded with great friendships and a football ‘home’. I look forward to coming back to the den in future and watch the mighty lions devour the opposition, then celebrating with a tops off party later that night.
