You will have a selection of Tasks on the test. Of the Tasks available, you must complete four
(Honors complete five). Each task is worth twenty-five points.
1. Translation: Latin to English
The Latin passage will include vocabulary from this unit as well as previous units. Most of the
grammar topics from this unit will appear at least once in the passage. Your English
translation will be graded on the following rubric (One bonus point possible for an
exceptionally good translation):
7 pts: Correct Usage of Vocabulary
7 pts: Grammar: Understanding of Verbs
7 pts: Grammar: Understanding of Nouns and Adjectives
4 pts: Clarity of Translation (readable English style, not a choppy word-for-word translation)
2. Illustration
You will read a Latin passage. Rather than write out a translation, demonstrate your
understanding of the passage by drawing a picture (it may be stick figures as long as it is
clear what they represent) to illustrate it. You must also label the picture with words and
phrases from the Latin passage to demonstrate your understanding of specific parts of the
reading. You will be graded as follows (One bonus point possible for an exceptionally good
illustration):
7 pts: Detail/Thoroughness (How much of the reading is reflected in your illustration; i.e.,
you would score higher for illustrating complete phrases or sentences than for illustrating
individual words, and higher for illustrating elements from each sentence than for focusing
on the first sentence or two.)
7 pts: Accuracy of Picture (the details match up to the reading)
5 pts: Number of Labels used (the test will specify how many labels you must have; also, the
labels must be taken from the Latin passage you are illustrating to count for points here! Any
labels you make up will not count toward the total. You must label the pictures with the Latin
phrases from the story, not English.)
6 pts: Accuracy of Labels

3. Analysis
You will have a Latin passage taken from one of the textbook stories we have read in Unit VI
(Lessons XXIX-XXXIV). You will be asked to identify specific grammar points within the
reading. For example, you may be asked to give the case, number, and gender of a noun or
adjective; the person, number, and tense of a verb; identify the subject, direct object, or
indirect object of a verb; identify what noun an adjective modifies; identify what use of the
ablative a noun represents; identify the appositive in a sentence; etc. There will be a total of
twenty-six blanks (some questions may have more than one part, such as
case/number/gender) for one point per blank. (One bonus point possible)
4. Culture
This section will consist of short-answer questions in English (answer in English) about the
stories we have read in this unit. Any elements of the Aeneas stories may be addressed. In
particular, review the names of people and places in the stories. Other questions will concern
the Roman monuments. There will be twenty-six questions for one point each. (One bonus
point possible)
5. Lexicon
Match twenty-six Latin words to a Latin synonym or definition. One point each (one bonus
point possible).
6. Sorting Hat
You will have a Latin passage with twenty-six words or phrases underlined. You must sort
them into categories related to this unit’s grammar, e.g., active or passive voice, present or
perfect system, pluperfect and future perfect tense, personal pronouns, possessive
adjectives; etc. Each word is worth one point. (One bonus point possible)
7. Composition (On this Task you may use your Notes and Textbook)
You will be asked questions in English which you must answer with Latin sentences (your own
sentences; you will not have specific English sentences to translate to Latin, but must write
your own answers to the questions in Latin). The test will instruct you to include specific
grammar constructions from this unit in each sentence. You will be graded as follows (One
bonus point possible for exceptionally good sentences):
5 pts: Correct Usage of Vocabulary
5 pts: Morphology: Correct Formation of Verbs
5 pts: Morphology: Correct Formation of Nouns and Adjectives
10 pts: Grammar: Correct Usage of Specified Grammar
8. Proofreader (On this Task you may use your Notes and Textbook)
You will have an English reading and corresponding Latin translation containing thirteen
grammar errors. Find and correct the errors in the Latin version. You may need to correct
endings to make a noun and adjective agree, make a verb the correct tense or voice, change
a preposition to form the correct ablative usage, etc. Each correction is worth two points.
(One bonus point possible)
