LATIN REVISION FOR YEAR 8 – CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS 2015 The February exam will be a recent Common Entrance Paper: There are 4 questions: Question 1 involves reading a passage and then answering questions in English on the passage TIPS Always read the bit in italics at the top of the page. It gives you any names that are included and tells you in a sentence what the passage is about Make a mental not of the vocabulary that is given to you at the side of the passage. Check how many marks there are for each question. The number of marks tells you how many important words are in the answer. i.e. 2marks – your answer must be a translation of two words. Question 2 is a translation and it carries 30 marks. TIPS Always write out each sentence in Latin and put the translation underneath. This helps you to get through right to the end of the passage and also if you cannot translate the whole sentence you can pick up a few marks for just translating the odd word in the sentence that you do know. Again read the Italics at the top of the page and note any vocabulary that you are given. The words are underlined in the text. Always look carefully at the ends of word to establish the person, number and tense of the verb and also the position of nouns in the sentence. Always look at the main verb first, you should find it at the end of the sentence. Question 3 is the grammar question asking you about parts of speech, subjects and objects, the meaning of English words with Latin roots, tense of verbs (Usually the perfect) and two very simple sentences to translate. TIP Always read the question carefully and THINK carefully. Remember in the translation that in Level 1 the accusative (the object of the verb) ends in ‘m’ and the verb always goes at the end. Question 4 is the civilisation question (an easy 10 marks if you have learnt your notes carefully!) TOPICS Domestic Life The Roman Army Roman Britain Greek Myths TIPS Always read the question carefully and make you sure that you answer the question that is asked! TOOLS FOR REVISION You have a sheet containing all the words you need to know for Level 1 but you need to LEARN it.
