Houston Independent School District 16th Battalion Army JROTC Phillis Wheatley High School 4801 Providence Street Houston, Texas 77020 SYLLABUS: SIX-WEEKS GRADING AND CLASSROOM PROCEDURES for School Year 2013 – 2014 TITLE OF COURSE: ARMY JUNIOR RESERVE OFFICERS’ TRAINING CORPS (AJROTC) for cadets in 9th through 12th grade. CAPTAIN EARL SMITH (SENIOR ARMY INSTRUCTOR) FIRST SERGEANT SMILEY CAPERS (ARMY INSTRUCTOR) Student Conduct: the School and District rules, regulations, and procedures must be followed. See the school student handbook and HISD student code of conduct for details. Classroom Procedures: Cadets are expected to be in class on time, with proper material (pen, pencil, paper and in either Wheatley or JROTC uniform) prepared to participate in the learning process. Students must obey all class rules written and/or implied. The Senior Army Instructor and Cadet Commissioned Officers will be addressed as “Sir” or “Ma’am”. The Army Instructor and Cadet Non-Commissioned Officers will be addressed by their rank. Cadets are required to wear their JROTC Uniform. The only cadets who are excused from wearing their uniform are those whose uniforms are unavailable due to size or religious beliefs. However, even in these cases the cadet must check with the instructors on a weekly basis, to determine the uniform status. A cadet may seek approval from instructor in order to obtain permission to wear the uniform on Thursday/Friday for credit. Students refusing to wear the uniform shall be classified as “participating students”. “Participating students” will not be issued uniforms. A “Participating Student” may only receive a maximum grade of a 70 for the course. Participating Students may not participate in any JROTC Teams. Food, gum, or drink will not be allowed in the classroom. PWHS policy is that no food, gum, or drinks will be allowed in classroom. Violators will be warned once then; the infraction will be referred to an administrator. Disrespect of any kind will not be tolerated and will be dealt with immediately in accordance with JROTC, School, and/or HISD Policies. A cadet must attend class regularly as stated in HISD Policy. Tardy and absences will adversely affect the cadet’s promotions, awards, and grade status. Each cadet must maintain a portfolio. Writing is mandatory for all cadets enrolled or students assigned to an instructor’s class, no exceptions! The grades will be assigned based primarily on the cadets’ willingness to write with the intent of improving his/her writing skills. Cadets and students will be assigned individual or group responsibilities in the classroom to allow them the opportunity to develop leadership and management skills. JROTC uniform is required: The uniform will be issued at no cost to the cadets. However, if the cadet fails to return it, they must pay for the lost items. The uniform will be worn on Wednesday of each week. A cadet may seek approval from instructor in order to obtain permission to wear the uniform on Thursday/Friday for credit. It will be clean and pressed with the brass shined and shoes clean. Leadership Lab: All cadets are required to attend a leadership lab each week. The lab will give the cadets the opportunity to demonstrate and improve their Leadership Skills. Drill and Ceremonies consist of some marching movements that must be conducted outside. The marching is similar to the movements used in the military to build strong character, instill selfdiscipline, confidence, teamwork, and develop leadership and managerial skills. It also includes physical training (PT) exercises. V. Mandatory Inspections and Final Review: All Cadets will be required to undergo an inspection each week during leadership lab. In addition, each Cadet will be required to participate in a Formal Inspection. This event will take place at Wheatley High School on November 2013. b. A Final Review will be held at Delmar Stadium on Saturday, April 26, 2014 this school year. It is mandatory that each cadet attend this event. Failure to attend will result in a failing grade for the six weeks grading period. VI. Guidelines for assigning grades: a. Numeric Grades in percentage (six weeks): i. 20% = Test and quizzes ii. 25% = Classroom participation/Homework iii. 30% = Uniform wear/Participation during leadership lab/Rank-Chain of CommandStudy Questions iv. 25% = Six weeks exam Conduct Grade: i. Excellent ii. Satisfactory iii. Probationary (followed up with a call to parents, documented and /or referred to an administrator) iv. Unsatisfactory (will be staff with the instructor, an administrator and a parent) Semester Grade: b. Three six weeks grades equals 75% c. The semester final exam equals 25% d. Total…………………………= 100% General Information: To enroll in AJROTC the Cadet must be at least fourteen (14) years of age, and in reasonably good physical condition. Parents must sign permission slips for the cadet to go on field Trips. If your son/daughter is on one of the JROTC Teams which competes in competitions, he/she may be required to have insurance and/or take a physical. A signature below indicates your agreement to pay for the uniform if your son/daughter loses his/her uniform.
