ANNUAL JROTC ESSAY CONTEST
1. The theme for this year’s annual JROTC essay contest is “JROTC Builds Character and
Leadership”. The annual contest allows cadets to express themselves in some aspect of their
personal character development fostered by their involvement in the JROTC program. All cadets
are required to write an essay! You are encouraged to let your teachers read and comment on it.
2. Instructors will select the winning battalion entry and submit that entry to the DJROTC office.
Cadet Command will select final winners and may award a $500.00 dollar savings bonds for the
top essays. The 1st draft essay is due by November 6th for B-Day and November 7th for A-Day
cadets. Final essays are due November 20th for B-Day and November 21st for A-Day.
3. Essays are judged on content, organization, grammar and structure. Criteria will also include
the development of the main idea or concept and should be the work of the individual cadet.
Essays must be between 300-400 words and typed on 8 ½ x 11 bond paper, Times New Roman
12 point font, double spaced with 1” margins. Essays must have a cover sheet attached
containing the cadet’s full name, home address, the SAI’s full name and rank, and the school’s
name and address. The essay and cover sheet template is on the backside of this paper.
