INTERNAL RESEARCH GRANT PROGRAM QUESTIONNAIRE
SEED PROJECTS
This new initiative fosters the development of sponsored programs, fellowship awards and other
direct support to faculty for research, scholarship and creative activities.
Funds available: $150,000 will be allocated annually to support projects of up to one year
duration with $15,000 for seed funding and $135,000 for small scale projects or bridge
funds. At its discretion, the Office of Research may adjust these allocations or funding caps.
This competitive program is open to all University faculty members. It is designed to provide
faculty with modest funds to support:
 travel costs
 acquisition or expansion of preliminary data
 nascent interdisciplinary collaborative activities
 gap year support for awards not competitively renewed.
Requests for up to one year of support can be made for one of three project types below for
which a faculty member may be Principal Investigator/Project Director for only one project type
during any calendar year.
1. Seed funds: Up to $1,000
2. Small-scale funds: Up to $15,000
3. Bridge funds: up to $30,000. Requires 1-to-1 match from the PI(s) school or college or
other source.
Deadlines:
Oct 15, 2015; 4:30p for seed and small scale funds
Bridge fund requests may be submitted at any time.
Over time, the internal grants program is expected to increase faculty success in securing
support for their research, scholarly or creative activities, and enhance the University’s
reputation for excellence in research, scholarly or creative activities, including multi- or interdisciplinary projects.

Allowable costs:
Travel. To defray the cost of an individual faculty member’s travel, e.g., to funding agencies to
meet with program directors; to conferences or professional meetings; to other institutions to
establish a new collaboration, or for other similar purposes.
Data sets, software, consumables or other similar items.
Fees. For analytical services, or human subjects participation, animal per diems, etc.
Other essential items. Such costs will be considered, based upon the rationale provided.
Q2.2 Review Criteria: The rationale for and merit of the request. The potential of the request,
if funded, to enhance the faculty member’s research, scholarly or creative activities.
Programmatic considerations: The faculty member’s rank and availability of other financial
supports. Distribute of funds across schools/colleges or disciplines.
Q2.3 Selection Process:
The University’s Associate Deans for Research will review
requests and make recommendations to the Vice President for Research. From among
meritorious applications, the Vice President will make awards based funds available, distribution
of funds across schools and colleges and or disciplines, and other programmatic considerations.
