Assessment of Student Learning Assessment Planning & Reporting Faculty Assessment Projects For assessment of student learning projects there are two options: 1) Identify a Course Learning Outcome or an Institutional Learning Outcome Competency in a course that you teach 2) Use the Course Learning Outcome or Institutional Learning Outcome that your department has chosen in a course that you teach Often the outcome is selected because there is a concern about the extent to which students demonstrate learning of the outcome. The assessment of the outcome means that there is a commitment to addressing the concern by using the assessment process to research it and to strive for demonstrable improvement in the student learning of that outcome. PLANNING In the planning step for assessment, you need to identify which Course Learning Outcome and Institutional Learning Outcome Competency you will be evaluating and the method you will be using to gather data about that outcome (see measures below). OUTCOMES & MEASURES IDENTIFICATION Identify the outcome(s) that are being assessed below and identify the outcome level (Course Learning Outcome [CLO]), and/or Institutional Learning Outcome [ILO] Competency) by checking the appropriate box. Identify the type of measurement instrument used to collect data. Indicate whether the measure is a direct or indirect measure of student learning. You must include at least one direct measure in your assessment project. Examples of common direct measures include tests, quizzes, projects w/rubrics, student performance w/ratings or rubric, and written assignment w/rubric. Common examples of indirect measures include: student surveys, faculty surveys, focus groups, advisory board minutes, and faculty discussions. 1 Assessment of Student Learning Outcome Type Specific Outcome(s) being assessed: Measure(s): CLO ILO CLO ILO CLO ILO CLO ILO CLO ILO Direct Indirect Direct Indirect Direct Indirect Direct Indirect Direct Indirect [add more rows as necessary] Data Collection Process & Timeline [Brief description of data collection process and timeframe for data collection and project completion.] REPORTING FINDINGS Initial Data and Findings [Summarize the data and findings from the measurement of student learning. Make sure to include specific data. For example, what is the percentage of students that demonstrated achievement of the outcome? What are the results on the test (and items), rubric (and individual criterion) that you used? Final grades should not be used. Please use percentage, mean, ranges, or another descriptive analysis technique.] 2 Assessment of Student Learning Curricular or Pedagogical Changes Implemented [Briefly describe the curricular or pedagogical changes that were made in this past academic year based on the data that you collected. If you did not make a curricular or pedagogical change, please describe your plan to do so for the next academic year.] Data and Findings (post improvement/change) [Summarize the data and findings from the measurement of student learning. Make sure to include specific data.] 3
