Establish and employ a writing process that leads to a well-supported, multi-paragraph essay synthesizing a variety of sources (including course and outside material) and establishing a strong, well-developed point of view in response to a given prompt. As assessed by: an essay written in class under time constraints graded by a rubric for process (notes, outlines, drafts), content, organization, format, and integration of sources (with documentation). 2. Read critically to identify main ideas, supporting details, audience, tone, and purpose in preparation for writing. As assessed by: a written summary graded with a rubric for main ideas, supporting details, audience, tone, purpose, and paraphrasing. 3. Exhibit strong academic behavior. As Assessed by: a questionnaire asking students to rank (1-5) their ability to: write clearly with confidence; speak clearly with confidence; read for main ideas; understand oral discussions and instructions. Through their experiences at SMC, students will ILO #1 acquire the self-confidence and self-discipline to pursue their intellectual curiosities with integrity in both their personal and professional lives. The third SLO supports this ILO in that students are expected to do their own work. ILO #2 obtain the knowledge and academic skills necessary to access, evaluate, and interpret ideas, images, and information critically in order to communicate effectively, reach conclusions, and solve problems. The first two SLO’s support this ILO in that they focus on students accessing, evaluating, and interpreting ideas and information critically in order to communicate effectively.
