MEDIA RELEASE r Rick Wilson MP Federal Member for O’Connor March 14, 2014 Grants for care of nationally significant heritage collections Community organisations can apply for grants to assist with the preservation of cultural heritage collections which are publicly accessible, locally held and nationally significant. The Federal Member for O’Connor Rick Wilson said artefacts, letters, diaries, maps, photographs, and audio visual material were covered under the 2014 Community Heritage Grants (CHG) program which is now open for applications. “Not-for-profit organisations such as libraries, archives, museums, genealogical and historical societies, multicultural and Indigenous groups can apply for up to $15,000 to assist in preserving their collections,” Mr Wilson said. “Projects assisted include significance and preservation needs assessments, conservation activities and collection management.” The grants program which opened for applications on March 3, is funded by the Australian Government and managed by the National Library of Australia. Support is provided by the Attorney General’s Department through the Ministry for the Arts, the National Archives of Australia, the National Film and Sound Archive and the National Museum of Australia. Mr Wilson said it was important to preserve nationally significant heritage collections for the generations of Australians to follow. “The National Library of Australia particularly encourages applications from groups in remote and regional Australia,” he said. Applications, which should be submitted online at www.nla.gov.au/chg, close on Friday, May 2. Since 1994, 1044 projects across Australia have received $4.9 million in funding. The two categories of projects supported include Collection Preservation and Training. When separate projects are planned for a number of collections held by the one organisation, separate applications must be submitted for each collection. Guidelines for applications are on the CHG website at www.nla.gov.au/chg This provides information on preservation, types of projects previously funded and grant application and assessment.
