Dear Friends,
I am writing to ask you for support in my aim to implement the new Maths curriculum
securely within the whole school. The new maths curriculum refers to the use of
‘manipulatives’ (mathematical equipment) from Year 1 – Year 6 to ensure that
children become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics. Pupils will be required to
use manipulatives to develop their conceptual understanding and apply their
knowledge accurately to problems.
As a school there is a vast disparity between the mathematical resources stored in
each classroom and I believe that this contributes enormously to the fact that some
teachers teach using manipulatives regularly and others don’t. We want our children
to become fluent and independent in their application of mathematics and to do this
they need to be given access to a consistent range of manipulatives within their
classroom setting.
I would like to bid for £6000 to completely equip each class with a range of
manipulatives to teach number. I propose that each class has a ‘maths trolley’ with a
range of resources that the children and teachers can access during lesson time to
aid their teaching and learning. We do have some resources in the maths cupboard
at the moment but there really isn’t enough and often lessons take an organic path
which can mean that resources you may not have planned to use are needed. If they
are in the maths cupboard and you are teaching it is unlikely that you have the ability
to go and get them.
Below is a breakdown of what I would like to store in each classroom and my initial
costing. I have also had to include in my bid price approximate costs for storage of
these resources and obviously if my final spend was less than £6000 I would return
the left over funds to the Friends.

I think most classrooms would also benefit from a storage unit for their equipment
and I have looked into buying some plastic drawer units. They are around £50.00
each. I do however need to speak to staff to make sure that they would have room in
their classrooms for an extra unit. I will also need to purchase little storage tubs for
the storage of the resources too. I will try and buy these from the cheapest places
possible to help with the cost.
I fully appreciate that the quantity of money I am asking for is substantial but I truly
believe that this will have an impact on the quality of teaching and learning in maths.
If you are unable to fund my whole bid I would gladly receive a donation towards
achieving my plan.
