Language target: Students will be able to appropriately use academic language vocabulary during class such as: probability, integer, concept, and exhaustive as observed by the teacher. Activities: Initiation/Opening Start the class by shuffling a deck of cards. Start talking about different cards, and in the middle “accidentally” scatter the cards onto the floor. Ask students how likely it would if you closed your eyes and picked out the 10 of hearts. Tell students that their answer requires thinking in terms of “probablility.” Teacher's Activities Students Activities Have a student privately select a card from Participate with answers and comments. a complete deck, and have the class vote on the color of the card (red or black). Repeat with another student, but ask the class to vote on the suit of the card. Ask why color was easier than suit? Time 4 Min Time 5 Min Lecture on EVENTS and SAMPLE SPACE as they relate to probability Write notes in math notebook: Introduce group project and help students begin. Groups of three. Each group has two dice. Write down all of the possible outcomes when someone roles one die, and when someone roles two dice. Share result with the class. Write on board the equation for counting elements in a list: n-m+1 (integers between n and m inclusive. Explore examples. Write equation in math notebook. Provide 5 Min examples for the class to consider together. Small group discovery learning activity: List of questions about probability that use Students work in groups, answer questions, and share with the class how Sample Space is an exhaustive list of all the possible outcomes of an experiment. Any subset of the Sample Space is an Event. 10 Min 10 Min 10 min the equation. Groups will try to come up they came up with the correct answers. with answers quickly and accurately, and will apply the equation. Ask students to share how they came up with the solution for each question. Closure Time Review the key concepts by asking questions of the students. Demonstrate the key ideas 6 min by using coins (heads and tails). Assign homework that reinforces the introduction to probability.
