Email – Sept 10 2015 Salvete omnes (Hello all!)! Welcome to Latin Exploratory. I am so glad that your student has decided to learn Latin language this year. I am attaching the syllabus and the sheet about the Latin exams and Latin trips. Please sign and return the syllabus if you have not already done so. Please send in either a check (made out to WA) or cash for $15.00 for the Latin exams we will be taking in the spring. Your student has their first quiz tomorrow on the translation of the chapter 1 story. I will select several sentences and questions from the story for your student to translate on the quiz. Please ask your student to translate the story for you several times tonight. Your student has been learning about nouns, adjectives, and verbs. Please ask your student to give a definition of the following: 1 What is a noun? (answer: names of persons, places, things, qualities, or acts) 2 What is an adjective? (answer: words that describe persons, places, things, qualities, or acts) 3 What is a verb? (answer: words that denote actions or existence) Brainstorm examples in English of nouns, adjectives, and verbs with your student. Ask your student to locate examples of nouns, adjectives, and verbs in the Latin story. Your student has also learned the three possible translations of present tense verbs. Ask your student the following: 1 What do all Latin verbs (learned so far) end with? (answer: -t) 2 Translate “scribit” in 3 different ways. (answer: he/she/it is writing, does write, writes) 3 Translate “habitat” in 3 different ways. (answer: he/she/it is living, does live, lives) Your student has learned that there are several differences between Latin and English. Ask the following: 1 Where can a Latin verb USUALLY be found? (answer: at the end of the sentence) 2 Latin does not have articles. Give three articles. (answer: a, an, the) Your student bookmarked several pages on their I-pad to practice at home. Please explore these websites at home with your student. 1 www.tabney.com (click on Ecce Romani) 2 Www.phschool.com (web code jfd-0001) The student textbooks have arrived and they will be receiving them tomorrow in class. This book should go home every night for HW and review and to class each day. The students have a workbook as well. You can help your student to be successful in Latin class this year by asking them about their work in class (have them translate at home to you, make flashcards together…). Please check their agendas and SPA for assignments. I am really looking forward to working with your student. Magistra Kim
