COURSE DESCRIPTION
Honors English 11 focuses on the development of the following Language Arts process skills:
reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and presenting. This year long class specializes in
text analysis and advanced analytical writing using American literature and non-fiction essays as
the focus. It is also designed to help prepare students for the Advanced Placement English
Language and Composition exam for those who wish to take it in May. This course will also be
excellent preparation for college English. The course is centered on a chronological study of
American literature and will involve students in critical and analytical reading and writing
experiences. Because this is a rigorous college preparatory course students will be required to
read several novels, plays, and essays, and to write several papers, including a major research
paper. Students will also be engaged in ACT preparation and vocabulary. An English GPA of at
least 3.2 is recommended for enrollment.
CLASS TEXTS
Pearson Literature: The American Experience (electronic text), Pearson/Longman Literature
Anthology, Supplemental Novels/plays: The Scarlet Letter, Huckleberry Finn, The Great Gatsby,
Our Town, Hamlet.
CANVAS: We will be using Canvas, an online learning management system, every week this
term. You must sign in, check the calendar, complete the assignments, and submit them
electronically. Assignments assigned on Canvas must be submitted on Canvas. Check out the
Announcements, Calendar, and Assignments Page for important information!
GRADING
* Most assignments will be computed on a percentage basis by the teacher. Some, however, will
be based on student/self evaluation, group assessment, and/or student-curriculum choice.
* Students may be asked to assess a classmate’s work, grade or peer edit another student’s
work, or record a score.
* Students’ grades will be posted on SIS weekly. Check them often!!
* The point scale for Honors English 11 follows the 93-100% is an A, 59% and below is an F.
DO NOT ASK ABOUT YOUR GRADE DURING CLASS INSTRUCTION!
EXTRA CREDIT
No more than 5% of the final grade may be from extra credit. Extra credit must not be
considered an alternative to regular assignments, and extra credit will not be made
available as a grade saver at the end of the term.
LATE WORK
Work is due at the beginning of class unless stated otherwise on Canvas. Almost every
assignment will have Punctuality Points assigned to it. If you turn it in on time, you will get full
points. If it is late, you get zero punctuality points. These cannot be made-up. I believe you are
fully capable of watching the calendar and getting in your work on time. Work not handed in due
to school-excused, prior-approved, and parent-approved absences must be handed in the first
class period back or it will be considered late and will not receive punctuality points. ALL work
must be turned in before the final unit test or paper. You may not turn in homework past its
content test date.
ATTENDANCE
In accordance with the Wasatch High School Attendance Policy, if you have more than a
combined total of five absences and/or tardies, you will not receive citizenship credit (UA).
Attendance/participation points are very important, and absences will affect a student’s
ability to get the best grade. New concepts, material, and assignments are presented each
class period. Students who do not attend class miss out on activities, discussions, and
assignments which cannot be duplicated outside of the classroom setting.
School sponsored activities as well as extended illnesses will not count against students.
Tardies: BE ON TIME! All other attendance issues are as per the school handbook.
CITIZENSHIP
CLASS RULES: Students are expected to show respect for the teacher and each other at
all times. Comments, questions and language should be appropriate for the classroom. Attire,
jewelry, and hair should not detract from the learning environment (see WHS handbook).
Classroom furniture and equipment should be treated with respect and care. Students should be
courteous when addressing the teacher and/or other students. Students should be focused on
the task at hand. Interruptions, distractions or personal conversations during direct class
instruction or class discussions will affect your citizenship grade.
As a teacher I have accepted stewardship over this classroom and the students attending. I have
been asked to make decisions concerning this classroom environment, a task I do not take lightly.
I will do everything in my power to be fair and unbiased in my judgments and to insure that all my
students receive quality instruction in a safe and comfortable environment. If students and/or
parents have any questions or comments concerning homework, class work, rules, or decisions,
please feel free to contact me by email or phone (find above). I am also available for a personal
consultation by appointment before school, 7:30-8:00 A.M. or after school, 2:30-3:00 P.M., or
during consultation time on Mondays.
