4th Grade Spelling Curriculum Spelling Folders: Students are given a folder designated for spelling lists and assignments. This folder should never be taken home. Student Lists : Individualized weekly spelling lists are created from your students’ writing. Lists are also created to practice certain skills that the teacher has recognized as an issue which needs addressed. This also allows for individual challenges to be met. Lists will be handed out at the beginning of each week. Students are to make copies of the lists. The master list stays at school in their folder. It is never to be taken home; however, they can make as many copies as needed for studying outside of the classroom. (Periodically, there will be an all- class list, in which every student has the same words.) Spelling Assignments: Students learn in different ways. There are numerous assignments for the students to choose from. Each student is required to have 3 assignments completed by the morning of the weekly test. If the assignment was completed on paper, then the assignment is to be put in the folder. If it was an oral assignment at home, then a note should be sent to school, so that the child can put the note in the folder. If it is an assignment completed at school, which isn’t able to be stored, the student is required to have the teacher check the work and initial the student’s lists. Weekly Tests: At the end of each week, students will be given their individual spelling test. After taking the tests, students immediately grade it with the highlighter and then place their folder on my desk. I will then check for weekly , assignments and grade the test. *Some weeks there may be an all-class list, and periodically there may be weeks that there are no spelling tests. If this was the case I would notify you by email or note.
