Homework assignments: Weekly and long term assignments can be found on the activity
sheet. Students use this sheet to plan classwork and homework. Ask your child to show you their
homework folder and activity sheet daily to see what they have done and what they still need to
finish.
How do I know what my child has for homework? Here are some tips to help you keep
your child on track .
1. Planning weekly activities - Your child's weekly activities are assigned on Monday.
Attached to the activity sheet is a planner so they can record what they complete in class and
what they need to do for homework. Check your child's planning sheet daily, help them schedule
assignments and ask them to show you what they completed in class.
2. Math. Your child is expected to complete a daily math lesson and its accompanying practice
problems. If your child does not finish this in class, they must complete it for homework.
Students must copy the problem and show their work. They do not have to copy word
problems word for word. They can paraphrase the information, but must clearly demonstrate the
steps they took to solve the problem.
3. Spelling is homework every night. Students receive a spelling packet on Monday with their
words and assignments. Depending on how they did on the pretest, your child will either have 15
spelling words or 9 more challenging vocabulary words. There are 5 activities to complete
throughout the week. On Friday, students take a test that assesses spelling and
meaning. Spelling homework is checked every morning. What is a spelling average? Spelling
homework completion counts for 50% of the spelling average, the weekly test counts for the
other 50%. So if your child completes 3/4 homework assignments on time and gets an 80 on the
test, their average is (75+80)/2 or 78%
4. Research. Students have selected topics, found resources, focused their topic and generated
questions related to their topic. They are now in the process of taking notes. Research
presentations will begin the second week of December.
5. Accountability. On the first day of every week, a progress report is sent home that details
your child's behavior and work completion. Please look for these reports, sign and return them
and don't hesitate to call me if you have questions or concerns.
