We are learning:
Math: We will review area, patterns, and work on
problem solving this week. We will complete a variety
of assessments for the end of this six week period.
Language Arts: We will review and complete
assessments this week for the report card.
Science: We will continue our unit on Plants, Animals,
and Prairies. The students will discover how living
organisms have basic needs that must be met in order
to survive in their environment. They will observe,
record, and compare how physical characteristics and
behaviors of animals help them meet their basic needs.
Social Studies: We will finish our Economics unit this
week and assess for the report cards on producers and
consumers.
Be sure to visit the Pecan Creek website. Go to Staff
and locate Mrs. Wenger’s webpage. She has tons of
awesome math videos and games on her site. The
students can practice skills such as place value, time,
money, fractions, problem solving, geometry, and
number sense. Encourage your child to go to these
sites regularly from home and work on them to build
their skills.
We also encourage the children to continue checking
our books from the library that are “Reading Counts”.
Students can take tests on the school computers and
earn points based on the comprehension learned in
these books. Then they use those points to shop at the
Reading Counts Store. On May 20, second graders will
be invited to a Reader’s Tea in the Cafeteria. At this
special event, the top 10 Reading Counts point winners
in our grade level will be recognized and rewarded with
trophies and ribbons. Keep on reading and taking those
tests!!!! Woohoo!!!!
 Keyboarding Program Has Begun!
This week each 2nd grade class will begin a thirty
minute keyboarding program in our computer lab. We
are very excited about assisting your child in learning
proper keyboarding skills. Since this is an addition to
our daily routines, our schedules will be slightly
different than what they have been. Our class goes
to the computer lab, daily, from 10:15 – 10:45.

THIS WEEK’S HOMEWORK:
Monday: Write a sentence that explains how to find
area and perimeter. Can you draw a shape made of
squares and tell the area and perimeter of that shape in
your journal?
Tuesday: Jane went to Home Depot and bought 52
plants. Then she planted 29 of them. How many of
them have not been planted yet? Please use your four
square method and two strategies to solve this.
Wednesday: Go outside and choose one plant to observe
closely. Record your observations with drawings and
words. List things the plant needs and how these needs
are being met. Then draw a flow map of the plant life
cycle from seed, to roots, to stem, to leaves, to flower!
Thursday: Draw five different clocks in your spiral.
Show 1:30, 5:50, 8:45, 12:30, and 6:05. Practice singing
the clock song: “Short hand tells the hour, long hand
tells the minute…... Then, draw and label a diagram that
shows a plant and its parts. Explain the function of each
part.
