Please go to http://www.vbschools.com/schoolnet to register for the SchoolNet Parent Portal to access your child’s grades. ***Student grades will be updated in SchoolNet every Monday by 4:00 p.m. Course Description: This nine-week course is designed to provide basic exploratory activities in computer applications. Topics will include basic operational skills and computer maintenance, introduction to keyboarding, word processing, desktop publishing, multimedia, telecommunications, spreadsheets, and legal and ethical issues related to technology. Course Objectives: Through a hands-on approach, students will have an opportunity to experience many computer skills that are essential in today’s high-tech world. Basic computer vocabulary and operational skills will lay the ground work for classroom instruction, while keyboarding skills will be practiced to help students use computers in a more efficient manner. The introduction of commonly used software such as Microsoft Office for word processing/desktop publishing, multimedia presentations, and spreadsheet, will broaden student understanding of how computers and software are tools to make our lives easier. Through the introduction of telecommunications, students will find new avenues of communication, research, and knowledge. Finally, class discussions will also include legal and ethical concepts as they relate to the use of technology. In addition to meeting technology standards, course objectives will also reinforce English SOL’s 7.1, 7.6, 7.7, 7.8 and 8.6 through a variety of teaching strategies. Course Scope and Sequence of Units: *The teacher reserves the right to modify the pacing and course sequence based on professional assessment of class progress and other factors. Materials: Software: Microsoft Office 2010 and All The Right Type Supplies Needed: 1. Pocket folder with brads – all folders will be kept in class. Students will be allowed to take them home if they need to study for a quiz. 2. Loose-leaf paper for note-taking 3. Pens/pencils 4. Student agenda Assessment Measures: The assessment of skills learned in Computer Solutions I will be measured through graded classroom computer activities, and/or quizzes. Student keyboarding skills progress will be assessed through the completion of hands-on practice exercises using the software program – All The Right Type and keyboarding quizzes. P. A. Middle – a school where every child achieves Grading Procedures and Policies: 1. Student grades will be based on approximately 10-12 assignments. 2. Assignments will be weighted equally and the Virginia Beach City Public School’s grading scale will be used. 3. All students will be issued a progress report at the mid-point of the 9 weeks. If you do not see your child’s progress report, please notify the teacher. 4. **Any assignment not completed on time will be entered in the grade book with a code of “Z” which means “Not Handed In.” This allows the students to know that if their work is not turned in how it can impact their final grade for the nine weeks. **New VBCPS Grading Scale Grade Range Letter Grade 93-100 A 90-92 A87-89 B+ 83-86 B 80-82 B77-79 C+ 73-76 C 70-72 C67-69 D+ 64-66 D Below 64 E Help Sessions/Make-up Work: 1. If a student is absent from class for any reason, it is his/her responsibility to ask the teacher for any make-up work on the day he/she returns to school. 2. Students will be given 3 days to complete missing work due to absences, but should see the teacher to make arrangements in making up this work. 3. Extra help and/or extra computer time is available in the morning before school. Extra help is given and scheduled as needed – just ask! Procedures for conferences, parental contacts: Please feel free to email me or phone me about any matter regarding your child. If I am not available by phone, you may leave a message in my voice mailbox and I will try to return your call as quickly as possible. Conferences may be scheduled by contacting the guidance department. Citizenship Expectations: 1. Students are expected to come to class prepared, complete assignments on time, listen and follow directions carefully and respect their teacher and fellow students. 2. Chewing gum, drinks and eating candy or food are not allowed in the computer lab! 3. Students are not allowed to change any properties on the computers. 4. All school division and Princess Anne Middle School rules and policies are in effect. 5. Disruptive students will be disciplined according to the Princess Anne Middle School discipline plan. P. A.
