JONES COUNTY SCHOOLS CURRICULUM GUIDE SUBJECT: Biology THIS IS A WORKIND DOCUMENT Quarter 1st 9 Weeks Content Material Covered Introduction of the characteristics of life. Understand in detail the structure and function of all cells(prokaryotes vs eukaryotes) including organelles and function (include photosynthesis and cellular respiration), the chemical compounds that comprise and interact with the cell (organic compounds , enzymes and cell transport). Use examples of different types of cells. Cell differentiation and stem cells. Know in detail how cells maintain homeostasis including (continue cell transport) the cell cycle ( address asexual reproduction) and a variety of adaptations that organisms have to maintain homeostasis. Protists should be a focus of some of the basic adaptation. Compare life functions in organism including: transport and excretion, respiration, nutrition and reproduction, growth and development. Understand how organisms interact with their environments. Make sure to re-visit carbon cycle (cell respiration and photosynthesis), review water cycle, and cover nitrogen cycle and make connections with organic compounds. Address ecological issues such as greenhouse effect, geologic processes, recycling of matter in the ecosystem, energy pyramids and energy transfer (review food chains and food webs). Include symbiotic relationships and organism interactions. Address behaviors and communication including pheromones, courtship dances, territorial defense. Ecological issues should transition to human impacts on the environment: populations and growth, pollution, global warming, fossil fuels, habitat destruction and non-native species. Touch on bio magnification and bioaccumulation. Make sure to include environmental effects. This includes phenotypes and genotypes and genetic crosses (complete, incomplete, codominance, multiple alleles and blood types). Include genetic mutations and genetic disorders. How does the environment affect the expression of genetic traits (meiosis, genetic variation and the environment affects on traits) Genetic technology including human genome, karyotypes, gel electrophoresis and DNA fingerprinting, gmo transgenic organisms restriction enzymes, gene therapy and stem cell research). Touch on ethical issues association with some of these issues. The theory of evolution by natural selection including disease agents such as bacteria and viruses changing over time, How cells might have evolved over time, fossil evidence to understand evolution of species (biochemical, homologous structures and vestigial structures). Make connections to genetic variables connected to this topic. How does geographic isolation affect speciation. How are antibiotics and pesticides effecting genetics and evolution? Classification of all organisms. How do you classify organisms including dichotomous keys and phylogenetic trees) 3.1 3.2 3.3 3.4 3.5 Worksheets such as Sponge Bob genetics, Oompah Loomph genetics and whos your daddy for blood typing
