May & June's Art Happenings This is a monthly blog written by students regarding what takes place in the art room. Isabella Vacca - 8th Grade- Yearlong Class In May and part of June the 8th grade yearlong art started with a charcoal and chalk pastel surrealism project. Surrealism is using Juxtaposition (putting two things next to each other that are different or that don’t necessarily go together) to create a story. Some artists we learned about were; Jacek Yerka, Rene’ Magritte, and Salvador Dali. We cut out about four images from magazines (or printed them out) and glued them on a yellow paper making a collage, every collage had a detailed and imaginative story behind it. We then drew our collage onto charcoal paper using a grid to make it more exact. Our class spent quite a long time blending and shading with color (chalk pastel) and black (charcoal) and white (chalk). After the fantastic surrealism, we came up with a design for our ceiling tiles and sketched it as we moved into the month of June. In order to do this we had to put everything we learned in art together because all of the following elements had to be included; line, shape, forms, texture, color, value and space. Next we sketched our design onto the bumpy ceiling tiles. And now we are working on painting them with tempera paint. When we are done Mrs. Banks will put the tiles back in the ceiling to make the classroom even more bright and colorful. They all look amazing! What a perfect way to end the year! A big thanks to Mrs. Banks. Katie Jones- 8th Grade - Semester Class In art this past month, we have made things using clay. My personal favorite was the lantern. First we assembled the clay slabs together and incised a design through the wall. Once it was glazed and fired, we were able to put a tea light into the lantern and have the light show through the cuts. Next we created a sgraffito vessel in which we assembled a jar, glazed it then carved through the glaze to the clay below. Finally, we created the CBPA(Classroom Based Performance Assessment). Our class had to make a working vessel such as a bowl, mug or pitcher. We added an animal in its environment to the sides of our vessel. Kenny Ridenour - 6th Grade In6th period art during May and June, we made trees that seemed as though you were looking up at them. Also we glazed our four clay projects which consisted of a pinch pot, a monster mug, textured animal sculpture and a lidded slab box. Next we did a grid enlargement where we drew an animal from nature larger onto another paper. After it was finished being drawn we shaded it with our pencils. Then we did Senufo Animals which are from the bark paintings from the people of the Ivory Coast. These had lots of patterns inside of our animals.
