Making Generalizations
Pages in my book________________
I have read _________________pages.
A generalization is a judgment. For a generalization to be valid, it must be
based on evidence.
Generalizations are not guesses. Valid generalizations often use words such as many, often, and
some.
Rain falls in many southern states in spring.
Generalizations that are not valid often make statements that are too broad and use words such as
all, always, every, and never.
Every student has read Tom Sawyer.

Using a direct quotation from your novel to prove your point, show how the author used
generalizations to make a judgment about a character or event in your book. You may also
find an example where one character makes a generalization about another character. State
whether the generalization is valid. Use quotation marks and page numbers around your
quotations. Please explain the reason for choosing the quote.
1. What generalization is made about a character or event in your book? Look for key words such as:
all, every, many, always, etc. 2. Use a direct quotation from your novel to prove your point.
Remember to use quotation marks and page numbers around your quotations. 3. Name whether or
not you believe the generalization is a valid one or not. Can it be proven?
