THE ROOTS OF 9/11: LEVELS OF ANALYSIS GENERALIZATIONS

Over the last few weeks, you investigated some of the individuals, events, and circumstances leading to the 9/11 attacks on the United States using the level analysis approach. By applying the tools of individual, state, and systems level analysis , you have brought clarity to events that some view as “inexplicable” or simply acts of “evil doers.”

Now you must extend your research independently by writing three (3) generalizations that explore the roots of 9/11. Write one individual level, one state level, and one systems level generalization. The goal is to use a levels of analysis approach to better understand and explain why the attacks on the United States occurred .

Generalizations must:

State your generalization in one sentence .

Indent and number your brief evidence statements below.

Support your generalization with at least three (3) specific evidence statements.

Cite your source and page number for each evidence statement.

Attach a Works Cited in MLA format.

Remember that a generalization is a statement of a pattern that is true, broad, and meaningful.

A pattern requires that the same factors appear in the same relationship more than once.

As you examine the evidence and look for patterns it is often helpful to consider:

Cause/effect

Comparisons

Opposites/exceptions/paradoxes

Relative importance

Patterns of change

POSSIBLE TOPICS -- Approve any other topics in advance.

Individual Level

How operational code motivated key actors

Impact of information-processing mechanisms on individual actors

State Level

How national interest guided state decision making

Influence of subnational actors in shaping state policy

Influence of political culture in shaping state policy

How could natural sources of power be a significant factor

Systems Level

Impact of polarity and systems change

How stratification determines decision making

Effects of resource distribution

Influence of transnational and supranational actors
