Figurative Language
Pages in my book________________
I have read _________________pages.
Figurative language is the use of metaphors, similes, or personification in
a text. It is not meant to be understood as FACT. It is meant to be a comparison. Figurative Language
works in a text because it expands the meaning of the phrase, sentence, or idea the author is trying to
make.

1. What type of figurative language did you identify in your novel? Look for examples of similes,
metaphors, hyperboles, & personification. Write the definition for the type of figurative language that
you found. 2. Use a direct quotation from your novel to prove your point. Identify the figurative
language that you found. Remember to use quotation marks and page numbers around your quote.
3. How does the author’s use of figurative language help you to better picture what is being described
rather than simply using literal language?
