Dean for Education Innovation
Accountable to the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Student Experience and Academic Standards and working closely with other members
of her senior team as well as with relevant Professional Services leads, within the framework of the University’s overall strategy,
policies and procedures the Dean will support a foundational programme of work to build institutional capability to deliver the
objectives of the Education Change Portfolio, in a new innovation-focussed culture.
Outline job description
1.
Be a high profile champion for education innovation and increase institutional awareness of and engagement with new
approaches to emerging teaching and learning issues across the sector;
2. Enable and foster innovation and excellence in learning and teaching practice at Cardiff University, including online,
innovative and flexible approaches to course delivery;
3. Work with Colleges, Schools and Professional Services Departments across the institution to enhance the coordination of
learning and teaching support-related activity and improve alignment with strategic priorities, taking into account other
work in progress across the institution to influence and define the Centre for Education Innovation’s place within an
overarching framework that supports excellence;
4. Support a range of events, activities and projects to engage the academic community in debate and discussion around a
distinctive “Cardiff approach” to learning and teaching and build a community of scholars;
5. Provide advice and support to the wider Education Change Portfolio in relation to excellence in learning and teaching;
6. Build and sustain relationships with colleagues elsewhere in the UK and internationally, including exploring opportunities
for collaboration with the GW4 and other key strategic partners;
7. Be a full member of the Pro Vice Chancellor’s Advisory Group and contribute to the co-ordination of the delivery of the
Way Forward.
Key Competencies, Capabilities and Experience







Experience of course delivery/teaching innovation in a variety of contexts
Proven track record of working in developing the Student Experience
Demonstrable experience of Academic Leadership with the ability to think strategically and engender a shared
vision
A proven track record of building effective and productive internal and external working relationships
Involvement with relevant professional communities
A wide breadth of understanding of current activities being undertaken within the area and requirements for
the future
An understanding of developments within the Student Experience in Higher Education across the breath of
subject disciplines






Proven capabilities as a team leader with the ability to inspire and motivate others
Good negotiating skills, flexibility and open mindedness
Inclusive and collegial management style able to establish relationships across a wide spectrum of
stakeholders including colleagues, students and external groups
Initiative, judgement, decision making and change management
Excellent oral and written communication skills, networking and team building
This role will be 0.4FTE and fixed term for three years. The role holder will receive an annual one off nonpensionable allowance of £5000.
