Job Description – College Dean of Education & Students (Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences) The Dean of Education and Students will be responsible and accountable to the PVC, Student Experience & Academic Standards and the College PVC, within the framework of the University’s overall strategy, policies and procedures, for co-ordinating the College’s student recruitment, programmes of study, its academic standards, the quality of the student experience and graduate employability. The key function of the role is to ensure alignment with University Regulations and Standards, co-ordinating the College’s/Schools’ engagement with relevant University activity. The Dean of Education and Students will be a member of the College Board and will be expected to work with the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Student Experience & Academic Standards and the Pro-Vice Chancellor for the College. The Dean of Education and Students will work through the Directors of Learning and Teaching (or equivalent at School level), and with relevant professional support staff, on the following: 1. Recruitment of home/EU students and international and postgraduate students; 2. The quality of the student experience at the College, including National Student Survey and other measures of student satisfaction; undergraduate, taught postgraduate, and research study; student representation, including liaison with the Students’ Union; and specific campus issues; 3. Promoting the development of learning and teaching, including their quality and enhancement, across the range of provision associated within the College; 4. Oversight of the portfolio of programmes within the College at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and undertaking periodic reviews of the portfolio ensuring it meets the University standards; 5. The implementation of the University’s processes for programme approval and review within the College and its Schools; 6. The implementation of the University’s assessment processes within the College and Schools, ensuring they promote high academic standards and maintain the quality of the Cardiff University degree, and that they take due account of the need not to overassess students; 7. The implementation of the University’s widening access activities within the College and Schools; 8. Ensuring full and active engagement of the College with the University’s student employability and skills activities, including the successful accreditation by relevant professional and statutory bodies of its provision; and leadership of curricular and extra-curricular developments to improve student employability within the College; 9. Identifying and supporting opportunities for cross-School and cross-College collaboration in taught programmes; 10. Ensuring the academic and financial viability of taught programmes. 11. To advise the PVC Student Experience & Academic Standards, and College PVC, on the allocation of resources and management and support structures to support the College’s and University’s objectives with regards to education and students; Key Competencies, Capabilities and Experience Strong academic Track record in research/scholarship and teaching Proven track record of working in developing the Student Experience Demonstrable experience of Academic Leadership with the ability to think strategically and engender a shared vision A proven track record of building effective and productive internal and external working relationships Involvement with relevant professional communities A wide breadth of understanding of current activities being undertaken within the area and requirements for the future An understanding of developments within the Student Experience in Higher Education across the breath of subject disciplines Attributes and Skills Proven capabilities as a team leader with the ability to inspire and motivate others Good negotiating skills, flexibility and open mindedness Inclusive and collegial management style able to establish relationships across a wide spectrum of stakeholders including colleagues, students and external groups Initiative, judgement, decision making and change management Excellent oral and written communication skills, networking and team building This role will be 0.4FTE (currently under review) and fixed term for three years. The role holder will receive an annual one off non-pensionable allowance of £5000.
