Executive Director Position Profile Main Street Program Lansing, Iowa May, 2013 Document1 Position Overview The Executive Director is responsible for the continued development and implementation of Main Street Lansing. This includes synthesizing and formulating revitalization strategies and recommendations in consultation with the appropriate individuals and advisory groups. The focus of the Main Street Program is economic vitality within the context of historic preservation of buildings. Lansing was designated a Main Street Iowa community in February, 2012. The Board and four standing committees are operational. Salary range is $22,500 to $26,500, DOQ, for a 30-hour week with a generous leave policy. Ideal Candidate Qualifications Essential Duties The ideal candidate will demonstrate a leadership and management style that conveys integrity, vision, collaboration, fairness and consistency. The following qualifications are desirable. Successful experience in the Main Street Program or a closely related program will receive preference. Previous experience as a Main Street Program Administrator for two years or more in a town of 5,000 population or less. Experience in economic development or non-profit management for two years or more. Supervisory experience for two years or more with volunteers or salaried staff in one or more of the fields noted below. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Architecture, Historic Preservation, Design, Planning or a closely related field. To develop, direct and implement a comprehensive Main Street program to both strengthen and broaden the economic base of Downtown Lansing. Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Document1 To administer operations of the Main Street Program in such a way that resources such as volunteers, finances and time are utilized at optimum levels on projects and activities of highest priorities. To establish and manage sound financial management policies and practices. To establish an ongoing community outreach that will increase volunteer participation and increase community support. To implement a public information program which conveys a quality image of the program. Knowledge of laws, ordinances and statutes pertaining to economic development, business, and management. Ability to work independently and professionally demonstrating the policies established by the Board of Directors. Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrates effective public speaking skills. Demonstrates an appropriate sense of humor. Demonstrates drive for results in a fast-moving environment and in the face of adversity. Demonstrates a rudimentary knowledge of financial management, banking and real estate practices. Demonstrates an ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the Board of Directors, four committees, business owners, volunteer staff, elected officials, governmental units, and the public. Demonstrates the ability to efficiently manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet performance deadlines. Demonstrates independent decision-making and problem-solving skills. Ability to effectively utilize software products such as Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Publisher and PowerPoint), as well as QuickBooks, Photoshop and Graphics Design to create properly designed and formatted documents. Demonstrates an effective use of social media such as texting, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and YouTube. Ability to edit video and update a website. The Community Demonstrates the ability to perform moderately complex mathematical calculations. Demonstrates the ability to drive, possession of a valid driver’s license and access to a motor vehicle. Ability to arrange personal schedule to permit attendance at out-of-town conferences which require overnight stays. Demonstrates knowledge and sensitivity to design and preservation matters. Demonstrates the ability to identify and comprehend important issues for business people and property owners. Demonstrates ability to perform physical activity at a moderate level, including standing, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling and crouching. Demonstrates a passion for the position. Lansing is located in Allamakee County in northeast Iowa, in the heart of the Driftless Area and the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge. It is nestled in a valley between two river bluffs, Mt. Ida and Mt. Hosmer. La Crosse, WI and Decorah, IA are each approximately 45 minutes away. Main Street is lined with approximately 32 storefronts. The population is just under 1,000 people. Outdoor activities abound; hiking, biking, birding, swimming, kayaking, canoeing, fishing in nearby rivers and streams, snowshoing, skiing (on snow or water), maple sugaring, mushrooming, and a variety of wild game provide hunting and photographic possibilities.
