Gaetz Brook Junior High School - Grade 8 Math
September 2012
Dear Students and Parents/Guardians:
Welcome to Grade Eight. Here is some information about Grade Eight Math Class that will help you
to have a successful year.
What materials do I need?
Students should have these supplies as soon as possible. Please be sure to check with your child
throughout the year to ensure they still have enough pencils and paper.
Binder
Looseleaf
Pencils/Sharperner
Calculator
4 Dividers (Mental Math, Notes/Examples,
Practice, Journal)
Eraser
Ruler
Colored Pen/Pencil
Water Bottle
What happens if I miss a class?
Students are responsible to find out what they have missed and get any notes and handouts given while
they were away. They need to make up missed work and make arrangements with me for extra help if
necessary.
When can I get Extra Help?
Extra help is available at lunch time on Wednesdays.
What resources will I use?
Students were issued a copy of Mathematics 8 Focus on Understanding which they need to bring to
every math class. These books are to be returned in June in the same condition they have been issued.
Students will have to pay $50.00 for the book if it is not returned.
How will I be assessed?
Homework is given several nights a week and will include completing class work, assignments and
practicing skills. Assignments and projects will be collected for evaluation. Quizzes and Tests will be
given and tests will be sent home for parents/guardians to sign.
Students need to stay organized in order to have a successful year. They are encouraged and assisted to
keep an orderly and complete binder throughout the school year.
Feel free to contact me at the school anytime if you have any questions or concerns.
