Introductory Statement
Nelyn Ang Jingyi was a student of Chung Cheng High School (Main) from 2011 to 2014.
Intellectual Independence and Passion For Learning
Nelyn is effectively bilingual in English and Chinese. Her proficiency in the Chinese
Language is evident from the distinction that she scored in the 2013 GCE O-Level Chinese
Examination, as well as her exemplary results from the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi Chinese
Proficiency Test (Level Five) administered by Hanban in 201???. For her competency in the
Chinese Language, she was chosen by teachers to take part in six-week Nanyang-Chung
Cheng Collaboration@Fudan, an extended immersion trip initiated by the school and
Nanyang Girl’s School in collaboration with the High School affiliated to Fudan University.
The programme allowed her to gain wider exposure and made her more global in outlook.
While learning in a different environment, she consistently behaved in a responsible manner,
and was able to adapt to changing circumstances easily. She showed great enthusiasm during
the course of the immersion programme.
Due to her proficiency in English, she was selected as chairperson of the class debate in the
2013 Chung Cheng High Inter-class Debate Festival where she was able to give constructive
comments and expressed good knowledge in the topics given to the debaters. An all-rounded
student, Nelyn also possesses a keen interest in Mathematics, which prompted her to take part
in The University of New South Wales Global Mathematics Competition 2012.
As a responsible learner who possesses a positive learning attitude, Nelyn displays initiative
towards her own learning by approaching teachers after lessons to clarify her doubts. At the
same time, she is punctual in the submission of her assignments and takes pride in producing
work of high quality. Her actions are testimony to her motivation to excel and it also reflects
her high level of self-discipline.
Interpersonal Skills
As seen from her achievements in Co-Curricular Activities (CCA), Nelyn was able to balance
studies with her active involvement in the Softball Team. As a pioneer member of the team,
Nelyn displays a spirit of excellence and takes the initiative to inspire a shared vision, by
setting goals together with the team before tournaments. Both tenacious and determined to do
well in the sport, she surmount obstacles such as grueling training sessions despite being
novel to it. Despite the setbacks she faced, Nelyn and her team persevered and worked
towards improvement. Their efforts bore fruit and the young team achieved first runnerup in
the ‘B’ Division Girls’ Softball East Zone Tournament in 2014. She also represented the
school in ‘B’ Division Girls’ Softball Nationals in 2014 and the team finished top 8.
As the Class Chairperson in 2013, Nelyn further honed her leadership qualities and
demonstrated a clear sense of purpose when carrying out her responsibilities competently.
She also displayed the ability to make sound decisions even when placed under pressure. This
includes having the moral courage to make difficult and unpopular decisions for the greater
good of the class. In 2014, Nelyn served as both the Class Treasurer and Chemistry
Representative. She was meticulous and handled the class fund records with great
responsibility. She was serious and took pride in her duties.
Being conscious of the need to contribute to the community and society, Nelyn actively
volunteered in the school’s Values in Action (VIA) programmes such as visiting and cleaning
up old folks’ houses, participating in Famine Camp 2014 organised by World Vision
Singapore and teaching children who spends their afternoon in Farrer Lodge, a childcare
centre. In 2013, she organised the CCA Service Learning Project with two other teammates
as the overall-in-charge. Through such experiences, she has not only been able to develop her
civic-consciousness but has also proven that contributing to the community can be genuinely
rewarding. Her active participation in VIA shows that she is a person who genuinely cares for
the community.
In recognition of her exceptional personal and leadership abilities, she was awarded the
Ministry of Education Edusave Character Award in 2013, as well as ‘The Responsible
Student Award’ and ‘The Caring Student Award’ in the school’s ‘Outstanding Students with
Character, Attitude and Responsibility (OSCAR) Award’ in 2013 and 2014 respectively.

A friendly and sociable person, Nelyn is approachable and can be counted upon to lend a
helping hand. She is a team player who values teamwork, and encourages cooperation and
collaboration. With her cheerful disposition and optimism, she does not allow herself to be
discouraged by setback. Instead, she has the maturity to strive to surmount difficulties and
obstacles. All in all, Nelyn is a dependable person with high moral character and can be
entrusted with responsibilities.
