Home – School link: March & April 2015 We hope that you found our last newsletter beneficial in knowing what your child would be covering in class. Please remember that this may be subject to change. World Around Us We have been working on our topic called ‘It’s a Disaster’. This includes looking at natural disasters that happen in our world. We have finished learning about the Titanic and we are now focusing natural disasters like earthquakes, floods, hurricanes and tsunamis. After Easter. our summer term topic is called ‘River of Life’. This will include a case study on the River Nile, looking at the positive aspects of flooding. Numeracy and Mathematics. We are covering the following areas in class and they should be supported by your child’s homework. Compass points Angles 2D shapes Perimeter Area Decimals We are continuing to focus on multiplication and division tables. It is extremely important that your child learns his or her tables every night to ensure that they achieve success in their written calculations. We are continuing our PIN (Parental Involvement in Numeracy) We hope you are enjoying playing the games together at home. It is important to play the games regularly to reinforce mathematical skills. The Arts Language and Literacy A major focus this term will be the types of words we use in the English language. In these two months we will look mainly at: conjunctions As we have covered nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs and adjectives in in Year 5 already we will be encouraging pupils to include these in their individual writing and would ask you to do the same with work at home. As we have just celebrated World Book Day (5th March), please continue to encourage your child to read both their class novel and library book. Don’t forget to ask them questions about new books, events and characters. During March, our class novel is ‘Bill’s New Frock,’ a lot of our Literacy lessons will be linked to this novel. Linguistic Phonics All the pupils in year 5 are working hard on their linguistic phonics. Each week spellings will continue to be linguistic phonics based or topic related (cued spellings) Personal Development and Mutual Understanding We are continuing our new PATHS programme. Children are learning to talk about their feelings and how to deal with them. The children are very excited about who is going to be ‘Pupil of the Day.’ Important Notes and Dates (Music, Drama, Art and Design) With St Patricks Day, Mothers Day and Easter coming up, we will be linking our Art and Design to these traditional calendar days. The children are continuing to enjoy their weekly Musical Pathways Lessons. 5th March: World Book Day 17th March: St Patrick’s Day: No school 27th March: Half day (Easter Holidays) 13th April: Term 3 commences.
