History
In 1884 a small meeting was held at the St. Charles hotel to address the mistreatment of horses
and mules used as draft animals. By the end of the meeting, the Louisiana State Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was created. It wasn’t until 1888 that the New Orleans City
Council adopted the necessary ordinances and chartered the Louisiana SPCA. Our history
reveals that what can be achieved in a day, a year, a decade or even in a century is not the work
of one organization, but rather the work of an entire community
