The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) is proud to partner with the Center for Spanish Studies to host an annual opportunity for Washington students in grades K–12 to participate in two contests. The theme for the 2016 competition is from a quote from Miguel de Cervantes’ Master piece, “Don Quijote de la Mancha: Sancho, freedom is one of the most precious gifts that has been bestowed upon human beings.” All student artwork and writing for each contest should address this theme. Contest Categories and Submission Requirements 1. Drawing Contest for Elementary School Students: There will be three prizes for each level. The drawings should be no larger than 8”x10” and not be framed. The drawings must be submitted by U.S. mail and received by 5 p.m. on Friday, February 26, 2016. Each drawing must be submitted with an attached drawing contest cover sheet. Cover sheets for the Drawing Contest are located at the OSPI Spanish Center Website. MEMORANDUM NO. 076-15M T&L Page 2 December 14, 2015 2. 18th Annual Literary Contest, “Escribo en español,” for Middle and High School Students: There are six categories. There will be three prizes for each level. The prose should not exceed 300 words for middle school students and should not exceed 500 words for high school students. The poems should not exceed 60 verses. The prose and poems must be written in Spanish and must be submitted with an attached literary contest cover sheet. All prose and poetry entries must be submitted by email to the Center for Spanish Studies at spnrectr@uw.edu by 5 p.m. on Friday, February 26. Entries must be in a Word document using 1.5 spacing and Times New Roman, size 12 font. a. Middle School Students: i. Prose for native Spanish speakers ii.
