Please Save for future use!!!!! New Spelling Homework Dear Parents, Attached is the new homework for our spelling program, Words Their Way. This new homework is aligned better with the ideas and beliefs of the program and will be more beneficial to learning the rules each week than the current homework. Please note there will be some procedural changes due to this new homework: I am asking that homework be handed in using a new spelling homework book (will need to be bought/provided by parent-THANK YOU!), independent of the current homework journal. The spelling homework should be a single subject notebook (just like the homework journal we use now). The spelling homework notebook needs to be handed in every Friday. Homework not handed in or completed on the day that it is due (Fridays unless otherwise noted) will result in a color change to blue (as stated in the welcome packet at the beginning of the year) At least two activities must be completed from the attached sheet each week. Some of the activities given do not require writing, for example, Concentration. In situations like these, please note the date and the nonwriting activity played in your spelling homework book so I know the appropriate number of activities were completed for the week. Information and the answer key to your child’s sort can be found each week on my website under Subjects-Spelling beginning Jan. 26. Your child’s words will be posted on my website each week and can be found on the sort explanation page I send home weekly. Please have your child write them on individual small pieces of paper. I suggest using a zip lock bag for your child to keep his/her words from getting lost! These changes will begin the week of Monday, January 25 to give you time to get the notebook. I thank you in advance for supporting this positive change. If you should have any questions after reading this note or the attached activity page, please feel free to contact me via email at kwills@agcharter.org . Thanks so much for your continued support, Mrs. Wills Please Save for future use!!!!! Spelling Homework Expectation Words Their Way Choose two activities to complete per week. An entry must be made in your Spelling Homework notebook even when playing games such as Concentration. Return your Spelling Homework notebook every Friday. SAW (Sort, Alphabetize and Write) - Students sort their words, alphabetize the words within their categories and then write down the sort. Beat the Parent-Parent sorts the words while being timed by their child. The child then tries to beat the parent’s time while sorting their words. Speed Sort– Student completes the sort while timing himself/herself. The sort is then repeated to see if he/she can beat his/her previous time. Concentration - Students use one set of words and lay them face down. Cards are flipped over two at a time. The student is to read the words and determine if they belong in the same category. If the words belong in the same category, the student has found a match and keeps the words. This continues with students taking turns until all words have been used. Word Hunt - Students look for words in books that fit the rule/pattern. Words are recorded in their Word Study notebook. Blind Sort - Students work with a partner. One student places a word from each category on a desk. He/she reads the words while challenging his/her partner to place it in the appropriate category. Roles are reversed. Writing Sort - Students place the words in the appropriate category and spell the words correctly. Blind Writing Sort - Students work with a partner. One student reads a word while the other correctly writes the word into the correct column, without looking at it. After writing is complete, check to see if the words are spelled correctly and in the right column.
