How to Complete an Open Sort at Home Student writes a spelling word inside each box of paper provided. Cut the boxes out. Use the blank sheet of paper provided as “work space” for the sort. Student should write her/his name on the “ work space.” Student will sort his/her words into categories, which can be based on spelling patterns, word meanings, etc; Encourage students to sort into two or more categories. Fold the “work space” to show the number of categories and support your student in writing a title for each category. Finally, have your child glue his/her sort to the back.
