Purpose of Job
Under the direction of the Services Manager and Team Leader, and
with support from the Regional Peer Mentor and Volunteer Co-ordinator
the post-holder will build on the existing Recovery opportunities in
Walsall through the delivery of the Peer Mentor programme and the
development of Service User involvement and partnerships with service
user forums.
The post holder will identify, recruit, train and manage a group of
service users reps, volunteers and Peer Mentors who will receive
intensive and comprehensive packages of training to further their
personal development and contribute to the development and delivery
of a recovery oriented service across Walsall.
The post holder will recruit, train, supervise & co-ordinate peer mentors
and volunteers within the CRI framework to ensure the provision of
quality services. The post holder will work with existing service user
groups, in addition to developing additional groups as required, in order
to promote and support meaningful service user involvement in all
areas of Walsall service delivery.
The post holder will be expected to work flexibly within an agreed
number of hours and across operational sites as required to maintain
the most appropriate level of service provision including late nights and
weekends.
The post holder will be expected to take responsibility for their own
learning and development and fully engage with learning and
development, supervision and appraisal requirements as per CRI
policies.
The Post holder will also work with the Regional Trainer to support nd
deliver training to staff, volunteers and mentors across the Borough and
aswell as design and deliver training packages with the community to
raise awareness around the affects to drug and alcohol misuse
Key Activities:

To develop and maintain the co-ordination of an effective service user involvement,
peer mentor and volunteer training and placement scheme within the Walsall
Integrated Recovery Service.

Coordinate and where required deliver the Peer Mentor and Service User Rep Training
programme.

To identify, recruit, train, supervise & co-ordinate volunteers and peer mentors across
Walsall in accordance with CRI policies, frameworks and procedures.

Coordinate the effective transition of Peer Mentors from training through to placement
within CRI, partner Services and the wider community.

In collaboration with other staff coordinate effective supervision structures for Peer
Mentors and Service User Reps.

Deliver supervision to Peer Mentors and Service User Reps as required.

Work with partnership organisations to develop and sustain effective comprehensive
treatment pathways and broaden the client’s recovery plan accordingly.

To support individuals into paid employment and/or relevant training, education or
occupation

To ensure the promotion of meaningful Service User involvement within the Walsall
Service.

To develop and co-ordinate a Peer Mentor “buddy” system for new clients entering the
service across the Walsall area.

Where Service Users are not engaged with other tier 3 services the post holder will act
as overall recovery coordinator for those individuals

To work with the Regional Peer Mentor and Volunteer Co-ordinator to ensure the
effective development and improvement of programmes.

To ensure the co-ordination of services across all localities within the Walsall area
including a regular Walsall forum

To be responsible for the risk management and Health & Safety requirements of the
peer mentoring and volunteering service

To establish and maintain links with partner agencies and local support services

To ensure that peer mentor and volunteer records are maintained effectively and
stored in accordance with Data Protection requirements

To work towards the achievement of outcomes/targets as per the Service Level
Agreement to ensure consistently high standards of service delivery.

To work with Service Users to co-ordinate the regular publication of CRI’s Service
User Magazine

To ensure regular service user consultations are carried out within the Service

To contribute to monthly, quarterly and annual statistical returns and reports on the
service.

To work towards ensuring the achievement of outcomes/targets attached to the
project’s funding.


To design and develop training packages and deliver them across the Walsall Borough
To work with the Regional Trainer and support training delivery to staff where
necessary
General terms of reference:
In carrying out the above duties the post holder will:

Work flexibly across operational sites as required

Work flexibly within an agreed number of hours of work to maintain the most
appropriate level of service provision. This may include evening and weekend cover.


Person Specification
Essential criteria:
 Experience of working with Service User Representatives, Peer Mentors & Volunteers
 Experience of delivering supervision
 Experience of facilitating training
 A clear understanding of the need for, and ability to deliver, quality services.
 Working knowledge of integrated substance misuse treatment.
 A commitment to working with individuals to support recovery
 Experience of contributing to project development
 Experience of Service User Involvement Strategies
 Experience and knowledge of working with individuals facing substance misuse,
offending and social care issues
 Experience of setting up and running groups
 Experience of liaising and working with professionals from a variety of services
 Commitment to involving service users in service development and strategy development
and initiating change
 Understanding of statutory framework, guidance and good practice in relation to
involvement, engagement and consultation.
 Knowledge of drug and alcohol policies and interventions designed to address substance
misuse
 Knowledge of the range of drug and alcohol related problems and their impact upon
individuals, family and community
 Knowledge of effective ways of engaging and involving service users
 Ability to make contact with socially excluded service users and know how and where to
make contact with them
 Have or be willing to work towards achieving a recognised qualification in the delivery of
accredited training courses
 To understand the importance of different assessment methods whilst designing training
packages
 Proficient on MS Applications e.g Word and Excel
And the ability to:
 Communicate confidently and effectively, verbally and in writing.
