Stout Middle School Peer Mentoring Program Stout Middle School is excited to be able to continue the Peer Mentor Program this school year. This program provides individual students with the chance to build a oneon-one supportive relationship with a younger student or to assist small groups in a particular class. Seventh and eighth grade students have been selected to work in the following areas: Academic achievement- improving skills, grades and responsibility Social skills- encouraging honesty, commitment, decision making and problem solving Behavior modification- developing positive attitudes and changing negative behavior patterns through modeling Personal attributes- developing self-esteem, self-respect and the ability to set personal goals. Mentors will meet once a month after school with Ms. Poloni to receive training, address concerns and provide feedback of their experiences. All students are required to keep a weekly log of their experiences- highlighting major events or things that were accomplished throughout the week. This log will be 20% of the peer mentors grade. Mentoring programs have been proven beneficial to mentees in many ways as reported by National Dropout Prevention Center. The advantages of such programs include students’ improving self-esteem, earning higher grades in school, encountering fewer behavior difficulties and improving the ability to set and achieve goals. The key to building a successful program and relationship encompasses regular, consistent contact between the mentor and mentee on a personal level. We believe that all children have the potencial to succeed in life and contribute to society, However, not all children receive the support or possess the assets they need to thrive. The mentoring experience provides these students the opportunity to find support, counsel, friendship, reinforcement and a constructive example to emulate. In order to be eligible for a peer mentor position, students must be in and remain in good academic standing as well as obtain a teacher recommendation. We look forward to working with you and helping you become a peer mentor. Sincerely, Ms. Poloni APPLICATIONS ARE DUE BY TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 15TH! NO LATE APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
