GEO 100, F’10: Informal course evaluations (Intro to Earth Science) Responses have been shuffled! 1. Did you expect this class to be different than it actually was? How so? - Not really—pretty much how my advisor described it. No. A little bit, but in a very good way. No, I knew several people who took the class previously so I knew what to expect. I guess really did not know what to expect from this class. I thought that the teacher would be much meaner I really enjoyed the class. I went in thinking I was terrible at science and am leaving loving science and feeling fairly successful at it. No, I didn’t. It met my expectations. No, not really. I expected it to be a lot easier. I struggled through the class. No, it was just how I expected it to be. No, went just like it did in high school years ago. No. Yes, I didn’t think it would be this difficult. 2. If a friend of yours is considering taking this class, what is some advice you would pass along? - Study, study, study! Don’t expect to have a life other than college. You really have to study hard. Don’t miss a day. Be prepared to study a lot. If you don’t do it every week then you’ll have to cram lots of information in a short time. I would tell them to be ready to spend a lot of time studying. Show up every Friday for a quiz! Do the homework, come to class, pay attention. Work on their essay writing. Be there for quizzes. Don’t procrastinate and study hard. To make flashcards every test. Take pictures of the minerals and rocks—it helps! And make sure to not miss labs. Study for the quizzes. Quizlet is very good—also use the study guides. I would definitely recommend to anybody needing a good science class, or wanting to get into geology. Start early on the service learning and study with at least 3 others. Group study helps a LOT. 3. What topics did you enjoy most about this course? The least? - I liked volcanism the most and erosion the least. I thought they were all interesting, some were a little more involved and took more study time. Not the first few topics. I had a hard time grasping the ideas and terminology. Liked the rock, minerals and atmosphere. Really enjoyed learning about the local geology. Most: Plate tectonics. Least: Atmosphere. Most: Mineralogy. Least: … I don’t have a least favorite. I liked the rocks and minerals, even though it was stressful at times. There wasn’t really anything that I didn’t enjoy. Plate tectonics. Most: Minerals!! So interesting how they formed. Least: Scientific process didn’t seem important for what we would learn throughout the semester. Most: Rocks—wish we could have had a field trip—and glaciers also. Least: Minerals. I think I enjoyed all of them. Most: Discussion. Least: Rocks. Although I didn’t think I would, I found the rocks very enjoyable. The final section on climate change was the least. Earthquakes were cool. I wasn’t a fan of the last few topics. 4. Does this class fit in at all with your future plans/major/career path? Yes / No / Maybe If so, how? - Maybe. Only if I decide to minor in science and that’s a big IF! No. I’m planning on teaching elementary school. Not much need for this in depth of a class. Maybe. With a natural resources major, this class could definitely fit in with that. Maybe. No. No. Yes. I know more about the earth and plate tectonics and the atmosphere. Yes. Surprisingly, earth science is very important for elementary education. Maybe. Maybe. Public policy and we hit on some aspects that are related in the last section. Yes. By getting me started with a good understanding of earth science. No. Maybe. I am an elementary ed major so they help towards my degree. But I really enjoyed the class and might want to minor in a science. No. 5. What was most worthwhile about this class for you? (What will you remember best about the class a year from now?) - I enjoyed all the labs and how they were relatable to things in life. The best part of this class was I actually learned something. In a year I’ll remember the rocks. The entire class was extremely worthwhile. Hopefully I will remember everything. Still the rocks. For some reason they are ingrained in my mind pretty good. I learned so much in this class it’s amazing. Hiking will be so much more fun now! Same as number 4. Passing the class. How hard the tests were. The minerals and rocks. The final presentations. Really enjoyable way to end the class. My memorization skills improved. A year from now I will remember the powerpoints. Learning about how the Flathead Valley formed. How much fun the class was. I met some awesome people that I will remember. Finding out that the earth really does give us everything we need. Everything this class applies to most day-to-day life. 6. What did you think of the textbook we used? - It was really useful, and easy to understand. Was good. Good—really useful study materials. It was good. Very informative. I didn’t use it much so I really can’t say. Good. Didn’t use it all that much. It was useful. Honestly I hardly used the book. Pretty easy to read and user-friendly. I didn’t really open it… maybe twice? Definitely for glaciers. It was good and informative. A bit expensive. Super-good, informative. It was alright. I used the lecture notes more. Any additional comments: - Thanks for a great semester and all the help. - I never found earth science very interesting until this class. Now I really am interested in it. - Anita is one of the best I have ever learned from. - - The tests were very hard for me to understand the questions. It bums me out because I do not feel like they show how much I learned. I never really had huge problems understanding test questions and layout till this class. I thought I would be more interested in the material but I guess I found out something I won’t do. This had nothing to do with the teacher though, just preference. The tests were hard to understand (wording) and I think I’ve learned much more than my test grades show. Study, study, study!!!
