Objective - Students will be able to observe how rocks are changed through heat and pressure to form Metamorphic Rocks. Metamorphism – The process by which a rock’s structure or mineral composition is changed by pressure or heat. Recrystallization – The process by which bonds between atoms in minerals break and re-form in new ways during metamorphism Foliation – The arrangement of minerals within rocks into flat or wavy parallel bands; characteristic of most metamorphic rocks. Shale - Shale is really a Sedimentary Rock; it is included here to indicate the beginning of the ShaleGneiss metamorphic progression. Gray Smooth Slate Fine grained Layers Pyillite Has crystals Layers Schist More crystals Shiny Gneiss Clear black and white layers that are warped and bent Crystals
