GEOL 100 , S’08: Informal course evaluations

1.

Did you expect this class to be different than it actually was? How so?

I didn’t realize we were going to have to know minerals.

Yes, I didn’t know we would cover so much information!

No —I had the teacher before.

Yeah! Easier. Ha. And I thought I would learn less. Thanks!

Yes, I thought it would be a lot more general, not so in-depth on the subjects.

Nope, I took astronomy before so I sort of knew what I was in for.

No, we covered everything I thought should be covered in a geology class.

Yes, from what my advisor told me, you were a difficult, almost ornery teacher… then I came into class and realized you just have high expectations and a good work ethic.

Yes, being a 100level class I wasn’t expecting so much information in such a short time frame. But it was also more fun and interesting than I expected a geology class to be.

I learned way more than I thought I would.

I did not expect it to be so in-depth. Content was as expected.

No, I was warned before I took this class that it would be hard.

2.

If a friend of yours is considering taking this class, what is some advice you would pass along?

Don’t miss class, chick and coulbe check your work, STUDY and use the class website.

STUDY MORE!! For God’s sake!

I would tell them to keep up with studying and reading the book. Also I would advise them to attend class.

Use the website to study. Use Cornell notes to study and frequently review for exams. Never wait until the last minute.

Pay attention. Take good notes. STUDY!

Stay focused and get to know the teacher. Ask for help if you need it. Study for tests and go to every lab.

Study and show up, so that and you will be OK.

Study a lot, look up definitions of the terms and use note cards and learn how to spell.

STUDY! More than you think you need to…

Spend as much time possible as you can outside of class studying. Pay attention to the class notes.

This class may overload you if taking lots of other classes that require time.

STUDY STUDY STUDY STUDY STUD Y STUDY STUDY STUDY. And when you think you got it… STUDY!

3.

What topics did you enjoy most about this course? The least ?

I loved learning about rocks and minerals and I quite frankly hated mass wasting.

Volcanism; minerals.

Enjoy: Rocks and minerals, ac tually. Didn’t: Nothering, but maybe tectonics.

Most: The volcanoes and plate tectonics. Least: Minerals and their identification.

Most: Plate tectonics. Least: Minerals.

Most: Volcano information and earthquakes. Least: Minerals.

I liked the glaciers and tectonics the best. Mass wasting and streams the least.

I really did like the mineral project. But I did NOT like the mineral and rock identification.

Most: Volcanoes, plate tectonics, oceanography (wish there was more!). Least: Streams, rocks, minerals.

Fun interaction with peers on any topics. Test topics —not my favorite.

Most: Plate tectonics. Least: Rocks.

Most are the affects of glaciers on an area. Least would be minerals.

Does this class fit in at all with your future plans/major/career path?

Maybe —I plan on teaching elementary school and I’m sure geology will be part fo the curriculum.

Maybe —I plant to teach elementary grades and some wscience projects/experiments are necessary to learn at that age.

Yes —Man’s interaction with his environment is a critical part of history.

Maybe —I want to be a fantasy writer one day… so maybe.

Yes —teachers need to know a little bit about everything.

Maybe —I want to be a history professor and in private business. I don’t know if this will help me.

No (6)

5.

What was most worthwhile about this class for you? (What will you remember best a year from now?)

Plate tectonics.

I will remember the rocks and minerals and lots about glaciers for a long time.

Plate tectonics and different types of rocks (texture, composition and how they formed).

A river erodes upstream.

Working with groups on the labs.

I thought the information about the earth and why its processes occur were very important.

I think I will remember plate tectonics and my rocks.

I enjoyed com ing to class every day even though a lot of times I didn’t get to spend as much outside class time as I needed, which made the quizzes harder.

You —you are an amazing teacher. I will remember my rocks and minerals!

It really helped me focus on schoolwork all around. I felt compelled to achieve in every class.

Fun labs.

The rock exam was most memorable because I studied pretty hard for that and now I’m stuck identifying rocks wherever I go.

6.

What did you think of the textbook we used?

Good. I actually used it.

Ok —it worked but it worked more for labs than anything else.

Not really sure I needed to buy it.

Mehhh —I was not impressed. Class notes were more important.

It was a helpful resource.

Good and easy to follow if read.

I thought the textbook was great providing additional info.

Dead-on and very useful.

Didn’t use it much other than for the rock and mineral test preparation.

It was ok —we really didn’t use it that much.

We didn’t use it much except for lab. It was adequate.

Would have helped more if I read it!

Any additional comments:
