“JOINT-APPOINTMENT” / “ UNIVERSITY ASSOCIATE” APPOINTMENT
The “Joint-Appointment” and “University Associate” appointments are two different ways individuals interested
in rural health issues can contribute to the mission of the Center for Rural Health (CRH). Each of the
appointments will have an enhanced relationship with the CRH, which ideally will lead to new projects and
initiatives to improve rural health in the state of Arizona and beyond. This interaction could take the form of
guest lectures, mentoring, advising, research, grant writing, or service.
The CRH anticipates that these appointments will help stimulate interaction between the appointee, the
CRH, The University of Arizona (UofA), and the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health to
enhance its teaching, research and service missions. Access to highly qualified people who complement the
skills of the CRH, university faculty, staff and administrators is a cost-effective way of enhancing our
programs. For the appointee, it will enable him/her to access the CRH faculty, resources, and expertise
within the CRH. The CRH will feature appointees on its website and in other Center communication
mediums highlighting their new relationship with the Center.
Appointment types and definitions:
Joint-Appointments are awarded to individuals who currently hold a faculty appointment in other
college/units in The University of Arizona, and have the potential to contribute to the mission of the CRH,
and MEZCOPH. It is expected that the responsibilities held by the “Joint-Appointments” will include some
combination of the following: teaching on a periodic basis (broadly defined to include advising, mentoring
and curriculum development); collaborative research with CRH colleagues; and other duties as determined
by the Director, CRH. The appointment will be reviewed annually and the appointee will be notified of any
changes. Joint-Appointments are initiated at the Center level and submitted to the Division Director,
Community, Environment & Policy, and the Dean, Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health for
approval. If approved, an official letter will be sent from the Dean, Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of
Public Health, advising the appointee of their appointment.
University Associate appointments are awarded to individuals such as unpaid faculty, principal
investigators, visiting scholars, special committee members, approved guests, and others who are regularly
engaged in activities that directly support the University’s teaching and research mission. It is expected that
the responsibilities held by the “University Associate” would include some combination of the following:
participation in grant writing, guest lectures, service, and use of talents that significantly benefit the CRH,
and other duties as determined by the Director, CRH. The appointment will be reviewed annually and the
appointee will be notified of any changes. “University Associate” appointments are initiated at the Center level
and submitted to the Division Director, Community, Environment & Policy, and the Dean, Mel and Enid
Zuckerman College of Public Health for approval. If approved, an official letter will be sent from the Dean,
Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, advising the appointee of their appointment.
