Urenui School Curriculum Statement: MATHEMATICS & STATISTICS Rationale: Urenui learners will be exposed to learning opportunities in the Mathematics & Statistics Learning Area, that allow for personal success and enjoyment, in which they are challenged to think creatively, strategically, logically and critically. Learners will be encouraged to take risks, utilise problem solving techniques, and to predict and justify their thinking. Emphasis will be placed on children gaining sound numeracy skills and knowledge of basic facts in a variety of contexts and real life learning situations. Guidelines: 1. All Teachers will follow the Urenui School Mathematics & Statistics Overview for the year. 2. Numeracy Testing will be carried out in Week 6 Term 4 each year and entered into e-Tap. The Gloss Test will take place in Week 6 of Term 2. This is to be recorded on the Gloss NUMP overview on e-Tap. 3. Strand Testing (Pre/Post tests) will be carried out each term for teachers to group accordingly. Results will inform future teaching. Room 3 will use e-AsTTle testing for these areas. Room 2 will create their own. 4. Children are to be ability grouped (where appropriate, however there is still a place for whole class teaching according to testing results. 5. Learning intensions are identified for each group and entered into weekly planning. 6. The daily programme will be approximately 45-60 minutes in duration (4 times a week) and should include the following: Starter: (whole class twice weekly) Basic Facts: (twice a weekly in rotation) Teaching Time: Reinforcement Activities: Independent Activities in rotation: Previously acquired skills Simple computation Mental arithmetic Teaching and learning from Year 1 onwards Speed tests to occur. 3 groups – 2 taught per day each group 3 times a week Consolidate new concepts/strategies/skills through reinforcement activities or book work. At least one activity per week to be completed in Maths book Applying new and prior learning to problem solving situations through games, puzzles, projects and investigations 7. Classroom programmes are expected to provide a range of ‘hands on’ activities including: Activities through connected learning I.C.T. and supporting programmes Te Reo Maths fair Card games Board games EOTC 8. Concrete apparatus should be used as much as possible.
