Research Student - Skills Training Support Training and Support for Higher Degree Research Candidates at Macquarie – Starting Out WHERE SKILL SET IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW CME English for Researchers Writing research can be difficult at the best of times. There are special challenges for those whose first language is not English. The Centre for Macquarie English (CME) has a range of programs that can assist with English language training and the completion of IELTS requirements. An on-line IELTS Master program has four modules in academic writing, academic reading, listening and speaking. CME will also provide English language assistance for research candidates in a specially structured Faculty program. Ask your Associate Dean Higher Degree Research for further information. MUPRA is the Macquarie University Postgraduate Representative Association whose membership includes people just like you. It provides a range of workshops and associated information of direct relevance to research candidates. It also helps students requiring assistance in resolving issues relating to candidature and ensures the University is well informed of student matters. A representative of MUPRA is a member of the Higher Degree Research Committee. The MUPRA website contains a list of programs relevant to research candidates. MUPRA is affiliated with the Council of Australian Postgraduate Associations (CAPA). CAPA is a representative body and has produced a statement of minimum resources for postgraduate students and is available on their website. It is called 2004 Statement of Minimum Resources for Postgraduate Study OH&S Chemical Safety Training - The aim of the training programs is to provide knowledge and concepts in the application of hazardous substances regulation, especially on how to conduct a workplace assessment and read a Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). This training module is required for OH&S Coordinators and OH&S Committee Members, for managers/supervisors of laboratories. Statistical advice should be sought early in candidature to minimise the occurrence of later problems. Advice on methodology and data collection methods as well as data analysis and interpretation is available from Professor McNeil at the Statistical Consulting Service. Enrolled students in the Department of Economics, The Department of Education and the Department of Psychology are able to contact their local advisers and should do so in the first instance. These advisers are not available to assist students enrolled in Faculties/Departments other than their own. Expressing Your Voice provides valuable tools for quoting, summarising and paraphrasing evidence and also has strategies for avoiding plagiarism. Features of Academic Writing helps in the development of writing clear English and explores cohesion in writing. Writing a Research Report examines the purpose, structure and language of a research report through the analysis of examples. These programs have excellent feedback from research candidates. EndNote is one bibliographic management program that allows you to effectively manage bibliographic data. It does this by recording and organising references; automatically inserting citations into Word documents and formatting bibliographies; and importing references from remote databases and library catalogues. Macquarie University Library offers training classes and online tutorials in EndNote to research students. You will need to check with your Principal Supervisor about the referencing style that you should use which is most appropriate to your discipline area. The APA style is mostly used in Linguistics, Psychology and Education while the Harvard style is mostly used in Cultural Studies, Anthropology, Indigenous Studies, Economic and Financial Studies as well as Environmental and Life Sciences. Law used the Australian Guide to Legal Citations while Cultural Studies also Chicago and MLA, and International Communications uses Turabian. Research must meet the ethical and safety requirements of the relevant government legislation, and satisfy the guidelines of external funding agencies such as the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).
