(en español, por supuesto—libros, revistas, periódicos) Keep a journal to practice writing. Speak Spanish as often as you can. Listen to Spanish radio and television—rent movies and play them in Spanish—do all that you can to practice listening to the language. Review grammar notes, books or websites and PRACTICE! LISTENING: If you have cable, try to watch Univisión, Telemundo or Galavisión. Talk shows can be entertaining as can the “telenovelas.” Also, there are many radio stations on AM that are Spanish. They sometimes speak REALLY fast, but the commercials are slower. You don’t have to like the music—just to keep your ear accustomed to hearing Spanish. Grupo Radio Centro Radio Televisión Española RadioSudamericana CNN en español Batanga www.radioredfm.com.mx/ www.rtve.es/rne/r5/ www.radiosudamericana.com www.cnn.com/espanol www.batanga.com/ SPEAKING: Please try to practice speaking on your own. Get together with your peers who are also taking the course next year and spend an hour talking only in Spanish. If you work with native speakers, converse with them often. If you are traveling to a Spanish speaking country this summer, use the language often and every chance you get with natives who you meet. Take advantage of every opportunity you get to use the language. GRAMMAR: Review present indicative, preterit and imperfect tenses of verbs. Pay special attention to SPELLING and ACCENTS—these areas are where the problems exist in using these tenses. We will be reviewing these tenses at the beginning of the year, but practicing other tenses will be beneficial as well. ¿El subjuntivo, por ejemplo? Review any other areas of grammar that you feel are necessary for you: reflexive verbs, direct and indirect object pronouns, por vs. para, ser vs. estar, accents. www.studyspanish.com www.conjuguemos.com www.phschool.com www.colby.edu?~bknelson/SLC/index.php It is recommended that students spend 30-60 minutes a week over the summer reviewing their Spanish skills. The principal idea behind the suggested assignments is keeping Spanish skills alive over the summer and improving speaking, listening, and reading comprehension through practice. Write an essay, handwritten, in SPANISH, all about yourself, your growing up and family, your daily life and travels, hobbies and interests, and aspirations for the future. Please include why you are taking Spanish 6AP and also what you hope to learn in the class. Organization is important!! The essay must be 5 paragraphs or more, have an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion. It should be 200-250 words. This essay will serve as preparation for the persuasive essay we will write this year; please, please write the essay without the use of on-line translators (looking up words in a bilingual dictionary is okay) so I have a good understanding of how well you write in Spanish. Also, use any transitions, key phrases, vocabulary and grammar, etc., that you have learned over the years. This is your chance to “introduce” yourself to me, through writing, so…make a great first impression! III. Speaking Assignment: You will need to conduct an interview with 2 different Spanish-speaking adults. Your interviews should be 10 questions each and should contain your questions and answers typed in Spanish. Please take a picture with each adult (make sure it is okay) to verify that you actually completed the interview. You will turn in your interview questions, answers and photos along with your 5 articles and essay when you return to school in September. Sample questions that you can ask are: ¿Cómo se llama usted? ¿ De dónde es usted? ¿Cuántos idiomas habla usted? Describe su niñez ¿Cuánto tiempo ha vivido usted en este país?, etc. MANY of the custodians at Stone Bridge High School are native Spanish speakers; if you come back to school to conduct your interviews, please make sure that you stop by the Main Office and have permission to be in the building. You may also interview any other Spanish-speaking adults that you know in your community; please try to only interview adults who have a high or native level of fluency, to give you the best practice and answers to your questions. ¡Espero que todos tengan un buen verano! ¡Relánjense y diviértanse! ¡ Mucha suerte y nos vemos en septiembre!
